Her real name was Elizabeth Jane Cochran. She sent a letter to the director so well written that he gave her the opportunity to become a reporter. After going through the Dispatch went to New York, where he hired Pulitzer for the New York World and did a research project voluntarily entering a psychiatric asylum and wrote an article reporting the horrible conditions and abuses suffered and got the authorities to take letters in the matter.
