José Francisco de San Martín y Matorras (Yapeyú, Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata, 25 February 1778 – Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, 17 August 1850), known simply as José de San Martín or El Libertador of Argentina, Chile and Peru, was a Spanish-Argentine general and the prime leader of the southern and central parts of South America's successful struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire who served as the Protector of Peru. Born in Yapeyú, Corrientes, in modern-day Argentina, he left his mother country at the early age of seven to study in Málaga, Spain. In 1808, after taking part in the Peninsular War against France, San Martín contacted South American supporters of independence from Spain. In 1812, he set sail for Buenos Aires...

Clouds over the Americas, GOES satellite image. Three low-pressure systems form swirling cloud masses across the USA at top, one over the Pacific coast, one over the USA, and one off the Atlantic coast. These have classic comma shapes. Each system is bringing rain or snow to the land areas they cross. The data for this image was obtained on 31 March 2014 by the GOES 13 and GOES 15 satellites. The GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) weather satellites are operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
