Male Northern Cardinal High in the Treetop by Debra Martz I looked out my back window and this handsome guy was sitting in the top of my maple tree. I doubted there was time to grab my camera, dart out the front door, around to the side gate and then slowly approach the backyard. Glad I gave it a try because, as you can see, he waited for his photograph to be taken! Backyard bird watching can be quite good at times! Red-tailed Hawks are large hawks with typical Buteo proportions: very broad, rounded wings and a short, wide tail.The red-tailed hawk is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies.

Dreamy Heron ©Debra Martz I had just been admiring another Tri-colored Heron from the boardwalk over the marsh area, then I turned onto the boardwalk that goes out to the bay when I spotted this one in the Mangroves. I thought this was a beautiful, dream-like pose by this Heron as it gently preened its gorgeous plumage. Common Gallinule at Edge of Water by Debra Martz It's not often that I see the full length of the colorful legs and feet of the Galinule (Gallinula galeata) so I was quite pleased as this one posed on the outer edge of the water. I, also, liked the patterns made by the movement of the brackish marsh water at Leaonabelle Birding Center of Port Aransas, Texas. I had just returned from walking the 2 mile trail at the RV park hoping to get some bird photos. I heard a few but saw none! Tri-colored Heron Wind Blown by Debra Martz I had been watching one of these Herons earlier on the boardwalk for quite some time when decided I needed to move on ahead. I was walking out to a point observation deck when this one flew in and landed near me. Don't know if it was the same one or not but like how the wind was ruffling its feathers and the fact that it landed by that seashell. Young White Ibis Feeding in the Grass by Martz There was a family of Ibis feeding on insects in this grassy area located near the Intracoastal waterway in Port A, Texas. There were the all white adults, a few immatures and juveniles. Colorful Brown Pelican by Debra Martz The great thing about North Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Texas, is that beach driving is still allowed. So somedays I spend just driving and stopping along the beach to watch the coastal shore birds. This portion of the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River in Oklahoma is just below the spillway of the Great Salt Plains Lake. The upper portion of this image is the Riverroad Campground where we like to spend time especially during Spring and Fall bird migration. Was odd to see the campground completely empty on this January day as there are usually at least a few campers even when not the best weather. Immature White Ibis at Sunrise by Debra Martz A great place to be for sunrise as many birds arrive at the pond to start feeding. If I lived in Weslaco, Texas, I would be on the deck at the Estero LLano Grande State Park as many mornings as possible. The sunrise adds a beautiful golden glow to the pond; combining that glow with the wonderful sounds of all the birds is a great, refreshing way to start the day!

Eastern Kingbird in the Country by Dbebra Martz I had just turned onto the gravel road that leads to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge when I saw this Kingbird snatch an insect from the air and then return to this fence wire. So I stopped the vehicle and slowly opened the door. It sat there a few extra seconds after I was out of the truck and was able to compose and get a few shots before it flew off into the distance. Travelling in the Top End it seems like Whistling Kites are constant companions - they are everywhere! And they provide some great photo opportunities, this one captured just in the instant of taking flight.

Her cobalt blue mascara never runs! Quiet as her mate is noisy, this female Eclectus Parrot surprised me even further by choosing to perch uncharacteristically close to my lens.

Stately Reddish Egret ©Debra Martz These Egrets are normally quite animated as they dart across shallow waters, making quick turns all while opening and shutting their wings. But, no, not today! This one just stood so still it looked like a statue. I waited as long as I could but it out lasted me. However, it is obviously colored for the upcoming breeding season with those bright blue legs and brighter than normal two-toned beak. Tropical Green Jay ©Debra Martz The brilliantly colored Jay of green, yellow, and blue is a bird of the tropics whose range barely stretches to southern Texas. It is a noisy, colorful delight to see.
