Stately Reddish Egret ©Debra Martz These Egrets are normally quite animated as they dart across shallow waters, making quick turns all while opening and shutting their wings. But, no, not today! This one just stood so still it looked like a statue. I waited as long as I could but it out lasted me. However, it is obviously colored for the upcoming breeding season with those bright blue legs and brighter than normal two-toned beak. Tropical Green Jay ©Debra Martz The brilliantly colored Jay of green, yellow, and blue is a bird of the tropics whose range barely stretches to southern Texas. It is a noisy, colorful delight to see. Tri-colored Heron Vibrant Beauty ©Debra Martz I was surprised and happy at the numbers of these herons on this morning. It seemed every turn I made there was one more. Her cobalt blue mascara never runs! Quiet as her mate is noisy, this female Eclectus Parrot surprised me even further by choosing to perch uncharacteristically close to my lens.

Common Gallinule at Edge of Water - Painterly by Debra Martz It's not often that I see the full length of the colorful legs and feet of the Galinule (Gallinula galeata) so I was quite pleased as this one posed on the outer edge of the water. I, also, liked the patterns made by the movement of the brackish marsh water at Leaonabelle Birding Center of Port Aransas, Texas. This was taken from the new boardwalk that runs in a different direction from the one that was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. American White Pelican Gliding Along by Debra Martz The American White Pelicans were flying to and fro at the spillway. The early morning light creating wonderful shadows. The shadows casted by the wings of this pelican created neat shapes making an almost abstract bird in flight image. American White Pelicans Early Morning Feeding by Debra Martz The Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma is a wonderful place to catch many birds during Fall Migration. This variety of pelican arrives by the thousands at the end of September and in early October. They work together to herd fish, then go bottoms up like a dabbling duck for the catch. Daydreaming Dove by Debra Martz I was bird watching while sitting inside a bird blind. This White-winged Dove landed on this small branch and looked upward for a bit. They are vegetarians and commonly eat above ground. Perhaps it has its sights on a nice large seed or a berry instead of daydreaming. The Best of My Backside ©Debra Martz The Tri-colored Herons are beautiful in any side you get to see especially in the Spring when they add extra flair for breeding season. It's standing on a board, possibly a remnant from Hurricane Harvey, from the old boardwalk. Acadian Flycatcher Photopainting by Debra Martz The first few weeks of May were great for bird watching at Leonabelle Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas. There were tons of migratory birds and birds returning for their summer residence. After so many rainy days, there were plenty of insects for this tiny flycatcher to zip in and out of the tree and catch them on the fly! Cool Facts from All About Birds Curiously, no information exists on the ability of the Acadian Flycatcher to walk or hop. It is an excellent flier, though, extremely maneuverable and able to hover and even fly backward. It has been observed bathing not by standing in water, but rather by diving into water from above, hitting the water with its chest, and then ret...

Snowy Egret Performance by Debra Martz It might look like a performance but it's their attitude about territory that gets them up in the air and running sideways like this. Incoming one wanting to take over the fishing spot where the other was being successful. If there are several in close proximity, you will most likely get a show like this! Captured below the spillway at the Great Salt Plains State Park in northern Oklahome. Handsome Mourning Dove by Debra Martz The bluish crown, neck colors and bright blue eye ring of this male were just gorgeous. Birds, especially males, get much more colorful during breeding season. The female is more brownish overall with muted blue eye ring; they each have the black dots on the back. Most everyone in the US has this bird but it was just sitting there on the rock looking so pretty that I couldn't resist several shots. On a surprisingly cold and rainy morning in early July 2016, five young Bushtit brothers huddled on the old plum tree for warmth and comfort. They also unwittingly provided me with a one-in-a-million opportunity to get this family portrait.

Spring is in the Air - Northern Beardless Tyrannulets by Debra Martz What a treat to see this pair while on a bird walk at Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco, Texas. I was not the only birder that was thrilled, excited, wowed by this pair as they fly in and out of this Ball Moss. They are so tiny, measuring in at only 4-1/2" and a rare sighting in Texas. We heard their call and really thought that would be all we would get of them...just their beautiful sound! Spring is in the Air

Juvenile Cormorant Profile by Debra Martz Sometimes birds will cooperate and stay in an area long enough for you to get several shots...this was one of those times. An adult cormorant would be much darker all over. There are similarities in the Neotropic and Double-crested and sometimes hard to distinguish. But because of the more acute angle at the gape and not having dark lores I determined this to be a Neotropic. It would be much easier if they were side by side because of size...the Neotropic is a bit smaller. They dive underwater to fish and this one came back with a little twig of seagrass. They are a resident of SE Texas and further into Mexico and Central America.

Posing Anhinga by Debra Martz Well, not actually posing as it had been busy preening its backside. I thought I would never get a photo of its head looking forward but finally did! Note the tiny white feather atop its beak from all the preening it had been doing. Adult male Anhingas are black with silvery to white streaks but the females and immatures, like this one, have a pale tan head, neck, and breast. The bill, legs, and feet are yellowish orange. Seeing the smallest woodpecker in North America (usually the female) on the backyard suet feeder isn't unusual. Seeing this male (busy whittling wood here) and his female (unseen, but preening herself nearby) on the pear tree just when we got a spot of sunshine over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend, was!
