The twisted aerofoil shape of modern aircraft propellers was pioneered by the Wright brothers. While some earlier engineers had attempted to model air propellers on marine propellers, the Wrights realized that an air propeller (also known as an airscrew) is essentially the same as a wing, and were able to use data from their earlier wind tunnel experiments on wings. They also introduced a twist along the length of the blades. This was necessary to ensure the angle of attack of the blades was kept relatively constant along their length. Their original propeller blades were only about 5% less efficient than the modern equivalent, some 100 years later.

Propeller is a black and white photographic art print of the propeller on an old military airplane. During an air show at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona, we were allowed to walk around the grounds to look at the different aircraft they had on display. When I saw this aircraft, I thought instinctively that an abstract shot of portions of the plane would make a great black and white art print. Disney's Castaway Cay in the Bahamas has a couple old aircraft which no longer fly but are still evocative and intriguing theming for the island.

Westmoore Propellers

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning showed up at the 16th Oldtimer Fliegertreffen 2011 at the Hahnweide, near Kirchheim/Teck, Germany. It’s a actually a glider airfield with a grass runway. As always this air show event is quite fascinating. There are lots of historical airplanes taking part at the flight show. With some planes, like the legendary Junkers JU-52 or Antonov An-2 you can book round trips. The event takes place in 2-years intervals. Canon EOS 60D in Sports Mode, 1/2000 s, f6.2, 300 mm, ISO 100

This Boeing Stearman PT-17 showed up at the 19th Oldtimer Fliegertreffen 2019 at the Hahnweide, near Kirchheim/Teck, Germany. The Hahnweide is a actually a glider airfield with a grass runway – which fits very good to these planes. Canon EOS R, 1/200 s, f14, 200 mm, ISO 500.

There are a couple aircraft on Castaway Cay that are part of the theming of the island and fit in as it has a runway as well as a berth for Cruise Ships though it is now used as a bike path and not fo its notorious past employment.

Flying with a propeller or turbine in a plane is a dream of every pilot. Biplane or glider, with the rudder in the hand is flying a dream, like boys and model aircraft of a biplane in the air on sky.

This was taken at Minnis Bay,Kent,England, at the Summer Event. The Summer Event is held each year on the green at Minnis Bay,Birchington and there are various stalls including crafts etc. This year was also to celebrate the 90th year of the British Legion. During the day, there was a flypast by a Spitfire and this magnificent Lancaster bomber. This shot was taken from the ground and I have only cropped in slightly!!!
