After being banned from all the major clubs in their hometown of Washington, DC, Bad Brains moved to New York City in 1981 and recorded their first album at 171-A. "Bad Brains" (also known as The Yellow Tape) is the debut studio album recorded by American hardcore punk/reggae band Bad Brains. Recorded in 1981 and released on cassette-only on February 5, 1982, many fans refer to it as "The Yellow Tape" because of its yellow packaging. Though Bad Brains had recorded the 16 song Black Dots album in 1979 and the 5-song Omega Sessions EP in 1980, the yellow cassette was the band's actual first release. The cover art depicts DC's Capitol Building being struck by a bolt of lightning, an obvious homage to their DC roots.

CBGB opened its doors on December 10, 1973 and went on to make history. Its full name of CBGB & OMFUG stands for "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music for Uplifting Gormandizers." Although a gormandizer is usually a ravenous eater of food, the intended meaning was "a voracious eater of …music." The club's intended theme of country, bluegrass, and blues music along with poetry readings quickly yielded to the growing punk rock movement in America. Many notable bands played their first shows at CBGB, with acts ranging from punk and hardcore, to post-punk and new wave and pretty much everything in between.

"Orgasm Addict" is a song by the English punk rock band, Buzzcocks. It was the A-side of the band's debut single, with "Whatever Happened To...?" as the B-side, which was released on 4 November 1977. The track was controversial due to its sexual content and was banned in the UK. This was the band's only single featuring bassist Garth Smith, who joined in early 1977, but shortly after its release, he was expelled from the band. The song later appeared on the album Singles Going Steady and also on CD reissues of Another Music in a Different Kitchen.

Circle Jerks (stylized as Ciʀcle JƎʀᴋs) are an American punk rock band, formed in 1979 in Los Angeles, California. The group was founded by former Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris and Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson. To date, Circle Jerks have released six studio albums, one compilation, a live album and a live DVD. Their debut album, Group Sex (1980), is considered a landmark of the hardcore genre. The band has broken up and re-formed several times, sometimes with different bassists and/or drummers. They disbanded for the first time after the release of their fifth album VI (1987), allowing Hetson to focus on Bad Religion (where he had been a member from 1984 to 2013) full-time.

Crass were an English art collective and punk rock band formed in Epping, Essex, England in 1977 who promoted anarchism as a political ideology, a way of life and a resistance movement. Crass popularised the anarcho-punk movement of the punk subculture, advocating direct action, animal rights, feminism, anti-fascism, and environmentalism. The band used and advocated a DIY ethic approach to its albums, sound collages, leaflets, and films.

Wherever there is a great triumph, there is usually even greater tragedy. Such is the case with the Los Angeles hardcore-punk outfit known as the Germs, who, in four short years, lived dangerously, playing fast, brash rock 'n' roll with a much dirtier and nastier edge than their contemporaries; an edge that would prove to be sharp and deadly for the bands' confused and drug addicted lead singer. They only released a single studio album in 1979, but it was a banger stuffed with 17 songs dripping with aggression, despair, and pure rage. Titled (GI), the all-black cover with an enigmatic blue circle design echoed the Germs' stripped-down aesthetic perfectly and would be synonymous with the band until their untimely undoing in 1980.

Smash It Up is a song by The Damned, released as a single on 12 October 1979 on Chiswick Records that would go on to be considered the band's unofficial anthem. The single was the second release from the Machine Gun Etiquette album, where it was listed as Smash It Up (Part II). The B-side of the single was Burglar. The track is structured in two-part form: a melodic instrumental introduction that segues into an energetic pop-punk song. The song's lyrics criticize those who indulge in hippie culture (referring to "blow wave hairstyles" and "Glastonbury hippies") instead of advocating for political revolution. The perceived anarchic lyrics resulted in the track being boycotted on British radio.
