A rufous hummingbird in flight inspects some colorful poppy flowers.

Rufous hummingbirds are amazing little speedsters that migrate from Mexico to Alaska and Northwest Canada - 4000 miles - twice a year! This is an oil painting I did from a reference kindly provided by wildlife photographer Barry Outdoors.

Though they have a legendary reputation for being extremely feisty, the Rufous hummingbirds seem to be subdued this year, stealthily sneaking in visits to the flowers before suffering the wrath of the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This beautiful little stranger was camping out in the California Lilac, and guarding her precious stash of nectar from within this large cage-like shrub.

This is a little oil painting I did of a rufous hummingbird. These zippy little guys visit our hummingbird feeder in the summertime. They're super fast, adorable and surprisingly fierce.

The field guide to hummingbirds in North America indicates a female Rufous Hummingbird is indistinguishable from a female Allen's Hummingbird. The description is the same, and perfectly describes the bird shown here sampling a bromeliad flower. You be the judge.
