The Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Number of views as of 20th November 2018 = 370. The 170 metre (560 foot) Spinnaker Tower, overlooking the water-front at Portsmouth (Hampshire, England) and visible from miles around. The Tower represents the shape of a spinnaker sail billowing in the wind, a design accomplished using two large, white, sweeping steel arcs, which give the tower its unusual, yet striking appearance. The Tower is the centre-piece of the Portsmouth harbour redevelopment project, which has transformed the area, and also includes the popular Gunwharf Quays shopping centre. Date: 2nd January 2012. Spinnaker Tower, opened in 2005, is a 170-metre (560 ft) landmark tower which is the centrepiece of the redevelopment of Portsmouth Harbour in Hampshire, southern England. The design represents sails billowing in the wind. The tower stands on the shore of Portsmouth Harbour alongside the modern retail outlet shopping centre, Gunwharf Quays, in contrast to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard which houses HMS Victory, the masts of which can be seen in the background of this picture.

Sails on the Horizon is a painting

Back in February, before everything went crazy I visited Portchester castle in Hampshire. It was a cold grey day with oppressive dark clouds threatening rain. But across Portsmouth harbour, the city of Portsmouth, along with Gosport, and the two new aircraft carriers made an interesting skyline in a window of light. I painted this version in oil on a 16x12 inch board based on the photos I took that day. I've used a limited palette of cobalt blue, vandyke brown, naples yellow and sap green, plus titanium white.

I thought it about time I painted a view of Portsmouth (Hampshire, UK), so I was delighted to find this unusual angle where the Spinnaker Tower looks like a little model sitting atop a chimney. The view is from the city walls, above the artist's shops of the arches. Painted in oil on a 12x10 inch board.
