Terraced Houses In Beverley, Yorkshire, England

A weekend exploring Hull, wondering streets evocative of another time, snippets of childhood, a fascination with red brick and terracotta chimney stacks, a fascination with symmetry and Victorian dimensions. The day is mine, to explore as I wish, and I find myself in the Avenues, a Bohemian-feeling expanse of roads and alleys, baked under a hot sun in a wide sky. The tiles, the bricks, the walls absorb the day’s heat, releasing their nectar of tar and creosote, intoxicating and Proustian scents. An ice cream van’s jingle, with a bitter-sweet pang, the hum of traffic on the main roads nearby, and the breeze that carries a tang from the Humber and the North Sea. A lovely gift, a great souvenir of Hull.

A hidden corner that hugs the Water of Leith, on my way to the Botanical Gardens. A day of glorious Scottish sunshine, of a clear blue sky and gentle warmth. The stone radiates gold, brilliant white from the woodwork, with dots of yellow from sunflowers. It is quiet here, with Stockbridge a short walk away. The work is rich in realism and detail, filled with vivid colour; A wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh and a perfect gift.

Long fascinated by Montreal, I decided to paint this scene of summer, joy and colour, depicting the iconic and much loved rows of brightly painted quirky houses that are a symbol of the city; I first came here as a child, enthralled and at the beginning of life’s journey. I wanted to recreate the scene, with its intense light and vivid hues. The work is filled with detail, brightness and summer heat. A perfect gift, a wonderful addition to any collection.

Nadolig Llawen - Snowy Street

Where the New Town starts to end and Stockbridge approaches, where the hills are steep and the shadows long, I noticed the beautiful play of light and colour on this golden building. It was a perfect design of symmetry, Georgian, solid, with fan windows over the doors, and built of large blocks of stone. It was a perfect Edinburgh morning, a day of Scottish summer promised and delivered, the air tinged with pine and heather and brine. I wanted to capture that light. The work is rich in colour and in detail, laced with a strong realism and solidity that make it a perfect souvenir of Scotland, an ideal gift.

A wonderful, almost secret corner of Hull, a place of Bohemian charm, of Victoriana laid bare, rough at the edges at times, splendid palaces of bourgeoisie aging gently, their red bricks eroded. Nature spreads inexorably at the edges, a cool shadow and a musk-like scent, patches of mystery and darkness. Nearby, a stone’s throw away perhaps, is Newland Avenue, where cafés serve rich chocolate cake, cinnamon flavoured coffee, pots of strong tea in porcelain cups, accompanied by gooey scones and whipped cream. Charity shops with their promise of discovered treasure, and off-licences scented with spirit and hops. I took a last walk around this area of Edinburgh. The sun was shining again, the heat palpable, and in the air I detected the familiar tang of the hops from the breweries, several miles away. I walked on the quiet street, at the southern fringe of the New Town, fascinated by the symmetry and the evocative implicity of the Georgian buildings. I wanted to capture the play between the light, the colour of the stone, and the splashes of white from the painted walls and window frames. This work is a beautiful souvenir of a Scottish summer, a great gift and a perfect collection to any collection of Edinburgh artwork.

As the afternoon reaches its peak, the golden Edinburgh stone radiates magic, a bewitching magic that mesmerizes us and fills us with longing. A rare treat indeed is such a day of summer, a day when we can walk in our shirtsleeves and feel the gentle caress of heat. Above, a wide, blue Scottish sky, and from far, far beyond the city, comes the scent of the mountains, fresh and floral. I linger in the stillness of this crescent, memories of yesteryear my only companion. A perfectly symmetrical row of houses, jewels of Georgian design, havens of timeless beauty in the city. I love London’s mews. Little corners of peace, cobbles that still ring to ghostly hooves. Here London belongs to me once more. The shadows keep patches of cool shade, and mysterious windows look down on me. I imagine how wonderful it would be to live here, to tend a little urban garden of potted plants and fragrant wisteria. I am drawn to the bricks, to the scorched soot-drenched terracotta that evokes a London of yore, of belching sulphurous smoke and a whiff of the once imperial capital, that city of dreadful delight. Each brick holds a story. The work is rich in colour and in detail. It makes a wonderful gift, a perfect souvenir of London, and a great addition to any collection of urban-themed works.

A row of Victorian houses, the pinnacle of English solidity, faces the sea at Clacton. The sky is blue, full of brine and ozone, a tinge of vinegar and frying chips. Seagulls sing and crow, and from the sea comes the gentle sound of waves. Childhood memories, Proustian triggers of colour and taste, happy innocence, infantile joy and freedom. I was struck by the colours of the houses, by their height and stature. Decades of history preserved in brick, of grandeur and fall.

Bristol Rooftops

Edinburgh on a beautiful day of summer, a day filled with glorious Scottish sun, when the stone absorbs light and the city lives up to its unofficial title of Athens of the North. I walk alone, along streets, and crescent, and through squares, familiar and unchanged since childhood, inhaling the city’s scent. It is fresh, filled with flowers and with the thick, malty smell of distant breweries. It feels timeless, Eden-like, dreach wet days of fog, sleet and rain forgotten and forgiven. A lovely white stuccoed shop, a barber’s, sits quietly in the light of dawn, waiting for customers. The street is deserted, the windows hinting only at life within. I liked the patchwork of colours, squares of white, of milky coffee, lines of pink and blue. The sky is warm, suggesting a hot day to come, a day full of hope and joy. This work would make a wonderful gift and a great addition to any collection.

A favorite walk, a place of constant return, unchanging, the gentle assurance of history and memory. Here I find a wonderful café with cream cakes and silver tea pots and faded, retro beauty, A portal to another decade, to another time. I am transfixed by the blue and the pink stucco, and by the vivid colors of the shop fronts. This is my secret corner of London that forever belongs to me. Flowers And Houses In Edinburgh Terrace

A long walk on the lower edges of the New Town, soothed by the gentle heat, refreshed by the air that hints of lands beyond the Forth, of pine and heather and sea salt. The sky is so blue, so deep. It is a unique light, a rare treat, casting a spell of sorcery and magic, turning the stone to gold and the windows to crystal and sapphire. This view is rich in vivid colour, rich in detail and rich in detail. It makes an ideal gift, a wonderful addition to any collection.
