Gumball resents his younger sister, Anais, because she is the smartest member of the family. Gumball's mother is the breadwinner in the family, working long hours at the rainbow factory, and his father stays at home watching TV and playing video games.

Gumball, Anais, and Darwin all attend this school. Elmore Junior High even has its own cheerleading squad and marching band. The series revolves around the life of a 12-year-old cat named Zach Watterson, but known by the nickname "Gumball" (Logan Grove, seasons 1–2 and season 3 episode: "The Kids"; Jacob Hopkins, rest of season 3 to season 5 episode "The Copycats"; Nicolas Cantu, rest of season 5 onward) and his frequent shenanigans in the fictional American city of Elmore, accompanied by his adopted goldfish brother/best friend Darwin.
