Red Bridge, Heale Gardens Number of views as of 5th July 2017 = 700. This bridge crosses one of several trout-filled tributaries of the River Avon that run through Heale Gardens in the Woodford Valley, 4 miles north of the city of Salisbury (Wiltshire, England). "When visitors step into the garden at Heale House they are immediately transported into a magical and varied paradise of running streams and exuberant planting that they return to time and again to experience its many different moods throughout the seasons." Standing on the side of the river lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, looking over to the white painted lock keeper's cottage and the wooden office. The top gates are open and the lock chamber is full waiting for the next boat travelling downstream to enter. The weeather's been hot so there are umbrellas over control boxes to offer shade to the operator!

The scene walking by the lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. This side of the lock has a profusion of flowers whilst on the island, next to the lock keeper's cottage, are neat gardens. In the background the river rushes through the weir before flowing onward to Pangbourne and Reading. At this point the Thames passes between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs - this is known as the Goring Gap.

The lock keeper's cottage at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Situated where the Thames flows between the north Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills known as the Goring Gap. The first lock here was a flash lock with paddles instead of gates. The first pound lock was constructed in 1787 using oak. The rather fine lock keeper's cottage dates from 1879, just before the lock was rebuilt in 1886. The last rebuild was in 1921 with a refit in 2003.

Heale House Number of views as of 1st June 2017 = 500. Heale House is situated in the tranquil Woodford Valley, just 4 miles north of the city of Salisbury (Wiltshire, England). The house was built in the 1550s by Sir William Greene and was given to his daughter and son-in-law as a wedding present. King Charles II of England took refuge at Heale in 1651 before fleeing to France. The estate has changed hands several times over the centuries, but was bought by the Hon. Louis Greville in 1894, the great uncle of the present owner. The house itself is not open to the public, but the gardens are open to visitors most days of the week - click here for details.
