Contrary to the wonderful name of this beautiful shoreline bird... the Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) - doesn't do oysters! Oysters are not their catch at all... but rather they eat 'mussels and cockles' from the coast and worms inland. In the late 18th/early 19th century the term oystercatcher started to come into use in Britain from America. There, it was applied to the closely related American species of oystercatcher, which ate bivalves known as 'coon-oysters'.
