Its less often that you see Oystercatchers on rocky exposed shores... but areas where there are less tidal flat systems and estuaries, such as those of remote offshore island habitats ~ the oystercatcher sticks its neck out somewhat and forages for invertebrates within the crevices of the jagged water sprayed rocks...

Walking back along a breakwall in Coffs Harbour I came across a very cute Black Oystercatcher jumping from rock to rock around the water. I captured this Black Oystercatcher with my Nikon Coolpix P900.

Contrary to the wonderful name of this beautiful shoreline bird... the Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) - doesn't do oysters! Oysters are not their catch at all... but rather they eat 'mussels and cockles' from the coast and worms inland. In the late 18th/early 19th century the term oystercatcher started to come into use in Britain from America. There, it was applied to the closely related American species of oystercatcher, which ate bivalves known as 'coon-oysters'.
