Founded in 1925, Western Airlines was in a tough spot after WWII ended. The airline lacked the financial resources that other big airlines had, but still needed to grow to compete. Rather than chase the competition, they decided to set the bar sky-high. Western introduced pressurized cabins in 1954 and passengers were catered to with filet mignon and seafood, cigars, perfume, and orchids, and even champagne toasts. In 1956 Western added their official “VIB” (very important bird) named Wally, as the airline’s mascot. Wally helped redefine the all first-class in-flight experience and reminded consumers that Western was a premium airline and truly "the only way to fly."

Fan blades have been growing as jet engines have been getting bigger: each fan blade carries the equivalent of nine double-decker buses and swallows the volume of a squash court every second. Advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling have permitted complex, 3D curved shapes with very wide chord, keeping the fan capabilities while minimizing the blade count to lower costs. Coincidentally, the bypass ratio grew to achieve higher propulsive efficiency and the fan diameter increased.

USAF Thunderbird 5 gets airborne, note the number 5 is upside down on this aircraft as it is flown inverted for many routines, hence the 5 will then be the right way up!
