The ferocious aspect of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, Mahakala is shown in a flaming aureole, his six hands holding his horrific ritual implements. Attending Mahakala are four yaksha “ministers” in red and blue, and below they ride a bear and a horse and flank the protector goddess Palden Lhamo on her donkey. The celestial Buddha Amitabha presides, flanked by mahasiddhas and Gelugpa patriarchs. Tangkas at this scale often replaced damaged wall paintings.

In this rare 14th-century Tibetan painting of Chenresi, a cosmic form of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, he is represented with ten heads and one thousand arms, which fan out to form a golden aureole. Each of the Buddhist savior’s hands has an eye in its palm, an embodiment of his power to radiate wisdom in every quarter of the universe. He stands elevated on a lotus pedestal and is surrounded by cave-like niches, each occupied by either a lineage lama or a protective deity. At the lower left is an offering table with attendant monks. Two inscriptions appear on the reverse: one in Sanskrit (the ye dharma charm-verse, or dharaṇi) and one in Tibetan that praises patience, “the holiest ascetic practice.”

Avalokiteshvara is the bodhisattva of Compassion. The eleven heads see and hear all cries of suffering in the world. The thousand hands, guided by Wisdom eyes in each palm, are outstretched to help ease the suffering of all beings. I like to think that each of us has the capacity to be a helping hand of compassion and wisdom to relieve the suffering of all beings. My art begins as ink on paper. These designs preserve that raw look of ink on paper.

The Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Avalokitasvara), known in Chinese as Guanyin, is the embodiment of the virtue of compassion and became the most important deity in Buddhism around the sixth century C.E. Represented in different manifestations throughout Asia, Avalokiteshvara is usually identified by a small seated Buddha depicted within his headdress. Avalokiteshvara supremely exemplifies the bodhisattva’s resolve to postpone his own Buddhahood until he has helped every sentient being on earth achieve liberation (moksha) from suffering (dukkha) and the process of death and rebirth (samsara).

This is one of the "face towers" that adorn the Bayon temple in Angkor Thom. The huge faces, 216 of them, at the various sites in Angkor Thom are often grouped in fours around towers. Each of the faces is very similar to any other, Scholars are unsure of who they might represent, a bodhisattva, Brahma, or maybe King Jayavarman VII, who was responsible for the construction of Angkor Thom. All that aside, when capturing the image I was really drawn to the power of these faces as they adorn the towers. The faces seemed so peaceful with closed eyes and gentle smiles.

Standing at the center of this 18th-century Nepalese Buddhist mandala is the golden image of Vasudhara (“stream of gems”), a Buddhist goddess of wealth and abundance who also embodies the pursuit of learning and the totality of Mahayana ideology as symbolized by the Perfection of Wisdom sutra that she holds in her upraised left hand. To Vasudhara’s left is a green image of the Bodhisattva Vajrapani while a red image of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara stands to her right.

In the center of this 18th-century composition sits Buddha Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life, on a Chinese-style seat. In front of him, lotus blossom and its branches carry a king and his auspicious “Seven Jewels.” Amitayus presides over a paradisal realm with a two-storied palace behind him, the roof tiles of which carry the six-syllable mantra of Avalokiteshvara. The palaces in the corners of the painting represent realms similar to the central one and are situated at the cardinal directions around it, each of them occupied by an eight-deity assembly of the mandala of Amitayus.

Angkor Wat isn't just one temple, but a complex of many temples spread over a wide area. The complex is so large that you need to hire a tuk-tuk and driver for the day to be transported around the vast complex. This image is of the Tonle Om gate, which is the south gate into the Angkor Thom temple and its surroundings. The gate, also known as a gopura, straddles the road. Around the gate are four gigantic faces, known as Avalokiteśvara or Padmapani. These faces appear on several other structures within the Angkor Wat complex. When capturing this image, I was really taken with the serene power of the faces; they seemed to embody calm and compassion.
