Brecon, Powys - Mid Wales

An early evening walk along the towpath of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal as it leaves the canal basin at Brecon in Powys, South Wales . Dating from the early 1800s the canal was designed to transport coal and iron to Newport on the Welsh coast. It is currently navigable from Brecon to Pontnewydd and plans are afoot to extend this further.

The castle at Brecon (Aberhonddu) in Wales, standing above the River Honddu close to where it flows into the River Usk. This was one of the first stone castles in Wales, built by Bernard de Neufmarche in 1093. The Welsh, however, destroyed the town in the 1100s and so a stone shell keep and outer walls were built by the early 1200s. The section in the image dates from c.1300. In 1645 Parliament captured the castle and slighted (razed) the walls to prevent future defensive use.

It also joined with a system of tramways linking mines and quarries to the waterway. It winds its way through the Brecon Beacons, largely following the contours of the mountains as it tracks the course of the River Usk. It is currently navigable to Pontnewydd and plans are in place to extend this.

Brecon Standing Stones Number of views as of 7th September 2018 = 280. Standing Stones near the Welsh National Showcaves Centre, at Dan-yr-Ogof in the Brecon Beacons National Park. It isn't known how long these stones have been here, but it could be anywhere between 3000 and 12000 years. Date: 25th July 2015.

A impressionist style view of the scene at Torpantau in the Brecon Beacons National Park and the summit station of the Brecon Mountain Railway. This narrow gauge line transports passengers for about 6 miles from just north of the town of Merthyr Tydfil, through the National Park with its stunning scenery of mountains and reservoirs to this point, 1313 feet above sea level - hard work for the locomotives!

A narrowboat moored at Talybont-on-Usk on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal (known as 'The Mon and Brec') on a sunny summer afternoon. This peaceful canal winds its way from Brecon in Powis, through the Brecon Beacons and Monmouthshire to the docks at Newport, once carrying coal, iron and limestone. Now it's navigable only between Brecon and Pontnewydd but further sectioins are being restored with the aim of opening the entire length for traffic. This image is produced as digital art.

The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal as it makes its way to the town of Brecon. Here the waterway reaches its northern limit after winding through the Brecon Beacons, The canal was constructed to link Brecon with the docks at Newport, the narrow boats carrying coal, iron and limestone. A system of tramways linked the canal to the mines and quarries. It is currently navigable between Brecon and Pontymoile, with plans in place to extend this to Newport. This is a digital art image.

Looking towards the Brecon Beacons from the dam at the northern end of the Talybont Reservoir in Powys, South Wales. In the foreground is the valve tower reflected in the almost still water. Built in the 1930s to provide water for Newport, this is the largest reservoir in the National Park covering an area of 318 acres (128.69 hectares).
