The battalion's history can be traced back to 15 May 1846 when a company of miners, sappers, and pontoniers was formed at West Point, New York. Alpha Company, 1st Engineer Battalion is that company's direct descendant. The battalion has received 67 decorations and campaign streamers and eight foreign awards. Alpha Company served during the Mexican–American War of 1846, participating in the Veracruz campaign and charging up the heights of Chapultepec in Mexico City. During the war, three future Civil War generals, George McClellan and P.G.T. Beauregard served as lieutenants in Alpha Company, and the company worked closely with Captain Robert E. Lee, an engineer aide to General Winfield Scott.

Over 500 soldiers of the 891st Engineer Battalion reported to their armories on Sept. 21, 2004 to begin their mobilization for Operation Iraqi Freedom Operating from Camp Sapper II, Tallil Air Base, Iraq, the 891st soldiers had been involved in operation of security points, roving patrols, route reconnaissance, bridge reconnaissance, escort duty, interactions with the Iraqi nationals, and other stabilizing actions.

The 503rd unit cadre was selected from expertise of 7742nd Engineer Base Depot at Hanau. The were selected for skills as heavy equipment operators and maintenance specialists. The unit was named 503rd Engineer Company - Light Equipment and later designated as 503rd Engineer Company (Combat Support Equipment) in 1983. The 503rd served under the 563d Engineer Battalion on Ludendorff along with 7th Engineer Bde HQ’s.

The 26th Engineer Battalion (Combat) was constituted as a unit of the Regular Army on December 1, 1954 and on December 2, 1954 was activated as an element of the 23rd Infantry Division at Fort Clayton, Canal Zone.
