Expo '74, officially known as the International Exposition on the Environment, Spokane 1974 was a world's fair held May 4, 1974, to November 3, 1974 in Spokane, Washington. It was the first environmentally themed world's fair and with 5.6 million visitors, was considered a success. Nearly breaking even, the event revitalized Spokane's blighted urban core, pumping an estimated $150 million into the local economy and surrounding region.The heart of the fair park grounds was located on Canada Island, Havermale Island, and the adjacent south bank of the Spokane River, comprising present-day Riverfront Park, in the center of the city.

The 1974 World’s Fair took place in Spokane, Washington during the Cold War, though the Soviets were one of the first nations to commit to be a part of Expo '74. Their participation marked the first time since the New York World’s Fair of 1939-1940 that the Soviets had exhibited on U.S. soil. The USSR's pavilion was a massive show stealer that was by far the biggest exhibit at Expo, occupying an acre and a half of Havermale Island. Visitors were greeted by a colossal sculpted map of Russia outside the pavilion, which weighed over two tons, and were treated to "I visited the Soviet pavilion!" tchotchkes ranging from t-shirts and bags to posters and pins.
