Seeing these gas station attendant caps was a huge throw back in time for me. I remember the attendants dressed in uniforms with button shirts, caps and some even wore bow-ties in the very early days! Not to mention they would check your oil, water levels and wash the windshield! But in these current days the majority of gas stations are self-service with the full service the exception rather than the rule in most USA states. While traveling through Oregon a few years back, we noticed there were no self-service stations and the same for New Jersey; customers are not allowed to fill their own tanks in these two states. Oilzum, one of the first brand names in motor oil, has a rich history dating back to 1888 when F.W. White and H.P. Bagley established the White & Bagley Company in Worcester, Massachusetts. The goal of the company was to develop a practical and uniform quality motor oil with a long service life and good protective properties. Fast forward to 1905, and Oilzum Motor Oil was born. White and Bagley wanted to take the risk and guesswork out of lubrication, and their hard work paid off as Oilzum became a trusted name among early motorists. The familiar Oilzum kid became a fast friend, and the brand took the motor oil industry by storm.

Hudson Oil Company of Canada Ltd. was dissolved in 1971. It was not incorporated in Alberta but may be in another province or federally. It does not appear in the oil and gas directories for the 1950s and 1960s.

Despite it's relatively low budget, 1971's Duel is a cinematic masterpiece, and one of the more memorable scenes from the movie takes place at Sally's Snakearama Station. Sally's was shot at an actual gas station just off the Sierra Highway in Santa Clarita. The station was redressed to include a roadside attraction style reptile zoo for which the gas station gets its name and while there aren't any snakes in cages, you can still tank up at the gas station, albeit a slightly more modern version with a full convenience store and clean restrooms.

Founded as Charles Auto Supply in 1934, Charles would go on to open a dozen locations throughout the greater Washington Metro area, subsequently changing their name to Charles Auto Supply Stores. The retailer’s initial offerings were basic repair parts and supplies, but by the time the boys began coming home from WWII and began hot rodding their cars, the Charles stores began adding speed parts and go fast goodies. Streamline was Charles' house brand for several products, including their 'Hi-Speed Motor Oil.' By the late ’70s, dedicated speed shops and national auto parts supply stores were putting the squeeze on Charles Auto Supply Stores, and they struggled throughout the ’80s before closing up shop some time in the ’90s.

In 1972, Mill Jennings sold his gas station to Billy Carter, brother of President Jimmy Carter. It became an important landmark in the history of Plains, Georgia in 1976 when Billy’s station became famous nationwide, as journalists covering Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign made it their headquarters. In 1981 Billy sold the station to his son-in-law, and in 2008, it became the Billy Carter Museum. During its heyday, you could find Billy running the show, and his step side shop truck parked on site, which featured his CB handle, 'Cast Iron' prominently on the doors.

Now a publicly traded Canadian company with global interests, Husky Energy was founded in 1938 in Cody, Wyoming (USA) as the Husky Refining Company, with the acquisition by Glenn Nielsen of assets of the 4-year-old Park Refining Company from founder Valentine Monroe Kirk. The first refinery was in Cody, with a second constructed later in Riverton, Wyoming. In 1946, the Company relocated to Canada, with the Riverton refinery moved to Lloydminster, Alberta to take advantage of the expanding asphalt and heavy oil opportunities in the area. A wholly owned subsidiary, Husky Oil and Refining Ltd., was created and headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Cody refinery continued operations well into the 1970s, producing primarily asphalt.
