The Gilmore Oil Company was an independent oil company in California which was founded by Arthur Fremont Gilmore after he struck oil on his dairy farm in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles in 1903. His son, Earl Bell Gilmore, took over the family business and expanded its distribution network which, at its peak, operated over three thousand gas stations on the West Coast. He promoted the company in a flamboyant style with much advertising, branding, and sponsorship. Gilmore Blu-Green Gasoline was one of Gilmore's primary fuel products, marketing as 'premium gasoline at a standard price.'

This design is based on an old Clipper Gasoline porcelain sign which features their signature yellow, green, and orange color combination along with their telltale Boeing 314 Clipper long-range flying boat above sunset lit ocean waves. Clipper apparently produced both automobile and aviation fuel during their time and are a rather rare brand to come across in the antique circles according to those who hunt down vintage gasoline and service station signs and memorabilia.

“Put a tiger in your tank” was a slogan created in 1959 by Emery Smith, a young Chicago copywriter who had been given the task to produce a newspaper ad to boost sales of Esso Extra gasoline. The tiger wasn’t Smith’s invention, as he first appeared as a mascot for Esso in Norway at the turn of the century. The end of WWII and the resumption of petrol advertising is when the tiger made his US debut. The message was that Esso fuel was so powerful that it was the equivalent of having a roaring beast powering engines. From glass globe pump heads and gas cap tiger tails, to stuffed animals and bumper stickers, the campaign was a hit, both in the U.S. and abroad.

EZ Serve Gasoline was a chain of franchised service stations throughout Southern California that provided products and services of the EZ Serve Oil Company. While they were only around for about 25 years, they are forever remembered as the place where Navin R. Johnson got a job (and place to live) in the 1979 movie, The Jerk. The EZ Serve station was located in Pasadena and owned by Harry Hartounian who gave Navin an apartment in the back. Navin was soon to be thrilled to find that he is listed in the local phone book under his new address, though not long after, a gun-wielding lunatic randomly flips through the phone book and picks "Johnson, Navin R." as his next random victim.

Bruin Pennsylvania Petroleum Products was founded in the early 1920s in Bruin, Pennsylvania. Doing business as 'Butler County Oil Refining Company,' Bruin produced Bruinoil brand motor oils and Bruin brand gasoline, referring to them as "The Bear of Them All." Located between the railroad line and what is now Route 268, the Bruin refinery was a massive facility that employed many Pennsylvanians during its run. And like most early petroleum manufacturing facilities, the location was eventually designated as the number 3 toxic waste site (The Bruin Lagoon) on the EPA's SuperFund list.

During September 1919, Harry Sinclair restructured Sinclair Oil and Refining Corporation, Sinclair Gulf Corporation, and 26 other related entities into Sinclair Consolidated Oil Corporation. In 1932, this new entity was renamed Consolidated Oil Corporation. In 1943, it was renamed Sinclair Oil Corporation. Near the beginning of the Great Depression, Sinclair sold the remaining interest in its pipeline subsidiary to Standard Oil Company (Indiana) for US$72.5 million (Standard Oil had purchased a 50% interest in the pipeline subsidiary in 1921). With these funds, including an additional US$33.5 million from an additional common stock issue, Sinclair retired several promissory notes and prepared to weather the Depression.
