Glenfinnan Hoodies

Glenfinnan is where the infamous railway viaduct of Harry Potter fame can be found (I plan to paint that one another time). In this view it is behind me as I look out along the loch early on a May morning. The obvious view that everyone photographs is the gap at the end of the loch, but my eyes are drawn to the little peninsula and its clump of lush trees which are reflected in the calm water. It makes a suitable conclusion to the superb hike from Inverie through the glens of Knoydart that had taken me the previous three days. Painted from my original photographs, using oil on a 20x16 board, over an earlier version of the view.

Located in the Western Highlands of Scotland at the top of Loch Shiel is the 1000ft span Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct. The viaduct overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and the waters of Loch Shiel.

This is Loch Shiel who was heavingly used to recreate the Black Lake for the Harry Potter films! Any magical fans out there?

Glenfinnan in the Western Scottish Highlands, located in Lochaber and known for its viaduct, monument and the place where the 1745 Jacobite rising began. An area of stunning beauty and rugged landscape.

Those that like to fly around in old cars as they missed the train to school may be familiar with this view. Its looking down on the Glenfinnan viaduct that carries the West Highland line to Mallaig - made famous by the Harry Potter films. And no I wasn't in a flying car to get this view - I was climbing one of the surrounding peaks. It was February, it was damp and cold and I was about to enter the cloud base. I didn't get much further before turning back. I took the photo long before the films were made, and only now produced a 16x12 inch oil painting based on it. Was I tempted to add a flying car? Well no, as us muggles can't see them anyway.

The Jacobite crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct, May 2023 The Jacobite train, operated by West Highland Railways, runs between Fort William and Mallaig and is considered by many to be the most scenic railway journey in the United Kingdom. The Jacobite is seen here crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct, an engineering masterpiece built by Robert McAlpine & Sons between 1897 and 1901. The viaduct is built from concrete, and offers fine views of the Glenfinnan monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie, and out across Loch Shiel. The train (along with the viaduct) has of course featured in several movies, including four of the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Express. Date: 15th May 2023.
