The Bonneville Salt Flats are a densely packed salt pan in Tooele County in northwestern Utah. A remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, it is the largest of many salt flats west of the Great Salt Lake. Bonneville Speedway (also known as the Bonneville Salt Flats Race Track) is an area of the Bonneville Salt Flats northeast of Wendover, Utah, that is marked out for motor sports. The salt flats were first used for motor sports in 1912, but did not become truly popular until the '30s when Ab Jenkins and Sir Malcolm Campbell competed to set land speed records.

As an avid dry lakes racer, Paul Schiefer developed his own clutches and flywheels that could take the abuse involved in propelling his racers to increasingly higher top speeds. He set up shop in 1947 and began manufacturing his clutches and flywheels for his fellow dry lakes enthusiasts and as word got out, his products became popular in other motorsports well. By 1956 Schiefer was mass-producing explosion-proof clutches which quickly became the clutch of choice for hardcore drag racers and by the mid-'60’s, the company had become the single largest manufacturer of specialty racing drive train components in the world.

One of Moon's most popular accessories in the early days was the Power Shift line of shifters.

E. E. Lohn. Co., or EELCO, was founded in 1956 in Inglewood, California and started out specializing in hardware for hot rods and dry lake racers. They eventually had a whole line of speed parts, but many remember them for their fuel tanks and fuel delivery hardware among other things.

Russetta Timing Association (RTA) held speed meets at various southern California dry lakes, beginning in 1939 and continuing well into the 1960s. It was an independent association, owned by Ray Ingram, who also owned the clocks. It flourished in part because the more prominent SCTA did not allow coupes or sedans until 1951, and RTA did. In their early years, this made RTA somewhat of an 'outlaw' as the new kid on the block that brought together the clubs with guys running traditional hot rods and not necessarily dedicated dry lake racers.
