Mine Thauk Market located on the east bank of Inle Lake. Mine Thauk Market day is one of the important 5-day markets in the region. On the market day, hill tribes nearby and the local people gather at the market place. A large and bustling market where one can find a real local atmosphere with a variety of produce from the lake. Other places of interest near the market in the lake are Paya Pauk Pagoda. Zakah Village and Nga Phe Chaung monastery.

Pa - O woman with her child at market at Inle Lake. The Pa - o the most nuimerous of several local tribes around Inle Lake.

This woman is taking a break from the market at Phaung Daw Oo Paya at Inle Lake. Another of the weekly markets. The pagoda itself houses five ancient buddha images that are not recognisable because of the layers of gold leaves stuck onto them. However, best time to visit is September.

Young Pa'o woman at Phaung Daw Oo Paya market looking at shampoo. Pa-O people are the second largest ethnic group in Shan State. Their homeland tends to correspond with the most visited part of Shan State, the Kalaw, Pindaya and Inle lake region, although the Pa-O are also found east past Taunggyi and south into Kayah State Highland Pa-O traditional dress is highly distinctive, with the women wearing plain black or indigo tunics with narrow blue and/or red trim and brightly coloured turbans wrapped around their heads, mostly in orange and red. As with many ethnic groups, the menfolk don’t favour traditional dress too much, though you may often also see them wearing turbans in a much wider colour and pattern range.

Another Cone Fisherman. This time taken on trip across Inle lake to Maing Thauk where another market is held each week. Located on the eastern side of the Inle Lake. This village is the place of colonial era Fort Steadman whose remains now are a few crumbling gravestones near the orphanage. The village of Maing Thauk is built on both land and water, on stilts. The two halves of the villages are linked by a 450 meter long wooden bridge.

Here the woman is weaving cloth, others use silk and even lotus stems. The cloth is also dyed on site by other family members. She lives and works in the building which is divided between work space and living space on upper floor.
