A true to life seasonal view from one of my hikes in the Peak District, Derbyshire. The Snake Pass weaves it's way through some of the most beautiful scenery the Peak District has to offer, you can pull over at a National Trust farm house or make your own way up to Bamford Edge to find a spot just like this one. You can't really go wrong... but bring a jacket.

Surrounded by moorland heather in Summer, Castleton village lies in the valley of the River Esk on the North York Moors, close to Danby, The was a medieval castle in the village which probably accounts for its name. The picture was taken from the edge of Commondale Moor when the surrounding moorland heather was in full bloom.

Hen Cloud, The Roaches, covered in heather, Staffordshire Moorlands close to The Peak District

Visit the Peak District and you're spoilt for choice when it comes to rolling moody vistas. Moorland, reservoirs, gritstone of the Dark Peak, huge reservoirs and tumbling waterfalls... there's so much to see when the clouds lift to show the windswept heather. Crowden Valley is one of the places I've visited most. The history of UFO sightings or 'Devil's Bonfires', spirits of lost Roman legionnaires, ancient packhorse trails. It's got it all if you're willing to look for it.

Its a while since I did a new painting of the stunning Outer Hebrides, so allow me to show you this new creation based on a view from the hills of South Harris. I'm standing on a hill of around 300m looking out to Luskentyre on a slightly hazy day, so the sea, the beach, and the background mountain are all softened by the light from their usual vivid hues.

Away from the main peaks of the Cairngorms, its sub arctic plateaus and deep cut U shaped valleys, there is another side to the Cairngorms - a place of rounded peaks and gentler valleys with fewer visitors. One such place is Glen Ey, just outside of Braemar. The few visitors hike in to tackle a cluster of unexciting Munro peaks on a big day walk. Fewer still spend the night, perhaps pitched by this distinctive erratic left perched by the ice age. You'll find it close to the end of the vehicle track, beyond which you find your own way, for there are worn paths here. Painted from a photo of mine, using oils on a 16x12 inch board.

Autumn sunshine lights up the purple heather on the North York Moors landscape on a September afternoon. The stone wall leading down tne dale towards the heather covered moorland. Yorkshire at its best!

Weighing more than 7 tons, the piece of sandstone rock was originally deposited in the ice age on Spaunton Moor. It was transported and erected on Danby High Moor to mark the millennium and has a carving AD MM on the reverse. After the stone was errected it was discovered that some of the indentations on the stone are actually dinosaur footprints. It certainly doesn't look out of place amongst the moorland heather.

Spooky surreal picture of a moorland on All Hallows’ eve, or Halloween if your prefer

This is a repaint (over the 2001 original) of dawn on Bodmin Moor (Cornwall) in Spring, looking North towards Rough Tor. You may just spot traces of the original showing through (which is oddly more apparent in a photo). I had wild camped overnight, having climbed the highest point on the moor the evening before. When I woke in the morning, this is the stunning view I was greeted by. Painted in oil on board 20x16 inches. I used a lot of purple in this picture, not only for Rough Tor and the darker clouds, but also mixed with sap green for the foreground vegetation. Surrounded by purple heather on Heygate Bank overlooking Rosedale Abbey is The Millenium Cross, one of the latest additions to the crosses of the North Yorkshire Moors. There is an ancient tradition of erecting crosses in remote locations across the moorland, sometimes used a way markers for those travelling across the moors on foot. The original Danby Beacon was constructed in the 17th Century to warn of an impending French Invasion. Since then, it's been the location of an early RAF radar station and now is used as a reference point by thousands of visitors and walkers each year. The present beacon is a recent replacement which was manufactured locally in Middlesbrough. The flame-shaped basket is made out of blued stainless steel, mounted around a cup that is decorated with bronze. The sea is just visible to the right
