Moorland near to Hawes in The North Yorkshire Dales

At the end of Summer approaching Autumn the heather covered moorland comes into its own with splashes of purple and red heather across the landscape. The North Yorkshire Moors are famed for it's displays of heather, shown here with a lone tree on the moorland near the Yorkshire towns of Hawnby and Helmsley on the North York Moors.

Over 30% of the North York Moors National Park is covered in heather and each Summer visitors from far and wide come to enjoy the spectacle of swathes of purple heather stretching out across the moorland landscape. Blooming heather stretching out across the moorland in Westerdale on the North York Moors during at the begining of Autumn. The stone wall leads across moorland fields to a footpath across the moors known as the Esk Valley Walk. Most of the common heather is also referred to as ling as was, in the past, burnt on the fires of moorland inhabitants. Many of the Yorkshire moors are now grouse moors which attract many to the field sport of grouse shooting.

Pink Heather On The Yorkshire Moors It takes a special kind of plant to thrive in moorland areas, where the weather is often cold, wet and windy. Heather – an evergreen shrub with twiggy stems – covers our open moorland. Usually lots of heather plants grow together, forming a thick, bushy carpet, sometimes up to half a metre tall. This helps the plant to survive strong winds. Heather also has tiny, narrow leaves shaped like the needles on a Christmas tree, which stop the plant from losing too much water as the winds blow across the moors. Nectar from heather flowers makes excellent honey, and local beekeepers often bring their hives on to the moors in late-summer when the heather comes into bloom. Drop me a message if you wou...

On the moors of of Muggleswick Common in County Durham, stand the Three Curricks (or Three Witches). These stone cairns have sat on Muggleswick Common since medieval time and it is suggested they may be part of an ancient burial ground, or even have a darker history.

The Two Moors Way is a long-distance path that runs from Ivybridge in South Devon to Lynmouth on the coast of North Devon, crossing parts of both Dartmoor and Exmoor (and passing into Somerset) along the way. The total length of the trail is about 103 miles (166 km), and some sections are difficult in poor weather.
