Whenever one thinks that a barrel is coming now, the pianist takes a break. Unheard of to play this way! Monk is described by contemporaries as an introverted eccentric. He stood out externally for his giant figure, his preference for unusual headgear and sunglasses, and his goatee beard. In this way he coined the image of the hipster of the 1940s and 1950s alongside Dizzy Gillespie.
