We got very excited on the last night of our recent trip to Lofoten because it looked like everything was coming together. The sky was clear, the northern horizon was starting to glow green...and then this happened. Luckily we got a few beams before the clouds completely covered them up again!

Olstind Mountain aglow in the pink of a January sunrise in the Arctic. The sun hardly got over the horizon, but for the two hours that it sat there, it turned everything an otherworldly pink colour. It really was a sight to see.

Morning in Nusfjord -- the lapping of the waves against the rocks, the cawing of seagulls, the absence of vehicles and busloads of visitors. It's a wonderful place to wake up and start the day. The sea crashes onto the rocks of the island of Hamnøya in the village of Reine. This was sunrise on my second-to-last morning in the islands, and it was by far the most memorable day of our trip. For two hours, the sun sat just above the horizon to the south and lit up the entire fjord in pink.

A tantalising hint of the aurora behind the clouds on Flakstadøya in the Lofoten Islands. Unfortunately these clouds were an ever-present part of our trip there so this was just about the closest we got to seeing the aurora. That said, there's no way we could complain, because Lofoten in January is one of the most stunning places in the world.

Taken at 11pm & illuminated by the Midnight Sun, The granite mountain of Torghatten on the island of Torget in Nordland county, Norway is instantly recognisable because of the hole in the mountain. Legend claims the hole was made by a troll chasing a beautiful girl who realized he would not catch her and fired an arrow to kill her. The troll-king of Sømna threw his hat into the arrow's path to save her. The hat turned into the mountain with a hole in the middle made by the arrow!

After shooting the sunrise in Reine, we had about an hour of sunset light before the sun disappeared below the horizon again. We decided to head towards Å at the very southern end of the islands to see what we could find. What we found was this amazing view in Sørvågen, a village a few kilometers away from Å. The snowfall from the night before was untouched and the light couldn't have been any better!

Off the coast of Norway in the Norwegian Sea, Fugløya is an island in Nordland county, Norway. It's peak reaches 765m and, although there are no permanent residents, there is a large bird population, including puffins. The highest point is the 765-metre tall Hagtinden mountain.

Morning light lights up Hamnøya and Reine in brilliant pink around noon on a January morning in the Arctic.

Six months ago, I stood on the Hamnøya bridge in Norway's Lofoten Islands watching the entire world light up in pink as the sun peeked over the horizon at 11am. 11am in summer couldn't be more different! The dominant colours were blue and green and everywhere around there was the buzz of activity, whether it was the never-ending stream of cars across the bridge or the boats crossing underneath the bridge below. Some things stayed constant though -- the mountains, the rorbuer, and somehow, my location on the bridge so I could get the same composition in two photos six months apart. I reckon this cabin has one of the best views in Lofoten in January, when the sun sits just over the horizon for hours at a time. The sun had been up for just less than 2 hours when I captured this scene. 15 minutes later, it was gone for the day.

I couldn't believe the light in the Arctic in early March. It seemed like golden hour went on for 2-3 hours after sunrise, and then it started all over again before sunset. It's a photographer's dream!

Still visible in the MIdnight Sun, Trollfjord or Trollfjorden is a 2km long Norwegian fjord and a popular tourist attraction. The mouth of the Fjord where it enters the Raftsundet strait is only 100m wide so can only be accessed by smaller ships. The fjord is in Nordland county in Norway,

We got so lucky with the light on our second morning in Reine. Not only did we get 2 hours of continuous sunrise/sunset, but we got it in one of the most stunning places in the world. I considered it especially lucky that I was wandering around only to be assaulted by the smell of drying fish. And why's that lucky? Well, fishing and drying stockfish is one of the main lifebloods of the Lofoten Islands, but I didn't think we'd actually see any evidence of it on this trip as it was too early in the year. Apparently, this fisherman started his season early! I know this rack looks empty, but if you squint to the left you'll see the hanging fish on the next rack over.
