A Peaceful Lake for Kayaking, Watercolor on Paper, by Conni Schaftenaar Lately my watercolor class has been working on "loose" painting of landscapes and waterscapes. This small study was done with a reference photo taken by our instructor, showing a kayak, a peaceful small lake with some reeds and grasses growing along its edge, near trees, distant trees on the far side of the lake, and rocks in the foreground - I should have made those into a fire ring or something! I struggle with keeping "loose" and when it got to the rocks, the last thing I painted, my nemesis "do all the details" took over, and the rocks are definitely NOT loose! This design is based on my oil painting of an idyllic summer day near a lake.

We were in Michigan to attend a wedding, staying at a lake house on Lake Lancer. It was the end of the summer, a cool, clear day with scattered clouds. It's a bit of a photographic cliché to capture an image out along a jetty, but given the opportunity, why not? I do hope you like it.

Peace & quiet at the lake.

This image is of part of the shoreline around Lake Yellowstone, in the national park. I remember that we had just had lunch, after which I took a walk. As I walked around a point on the lakeshore, I came across this lovely scene.

This is the view of the southerly end of Maligne Lake. The day we went there the weather was calm. The whole scene appeared so tranquil. In taking the original photo, I was drawn to the blueness of the sky, the blue of the distant haze, and the incredible colour of the water. I think it's such a lovely image; I hope you do too.

During the winter, the sun tracks very low in the Pacific Northwest, which yields beautiful sunsets over Lake Washington. Ducks dip and dive and create concentric eddies in the lake that separates Kirkland and Juanita from Seattle. Many wild birds flock to the lake to mate and migrate during the winter. They often mingle with cormorants on these former dock pilings to create beautiful wintry silhouettes.

The mirror surface of the crystal clear waters of a mountain lake reflects the gorgeous mountain landscape: majestic mountain peaks, steep cliffs of rocks, spruce forest, and blue sky.

This image was taken looking south from the promenade at Zell am See in Austria. The view over the lake towards the mountains is spectacular and even in June, there is still snow showing on the mountain tops. This particular June day was almost wind free which made the lake surface like a mirror; great for those on holiday and encouraging for anyone wanting to try out the pedalo!
