Two shire horses ready for ploughing, in their beautiful tackle, changed the image to sepia for a more vintage look.

This was taken earlier this year. Whilst the ground might seem quite hard with frost, you can see just how wet it was below the surface. Free meal for the gulls. What is it with them and a plough? In 1538, Hans Holbein the Younger publishes his Dance of death, a work of art that will redefine its own genre. In Holbein's work, Death is still very aggressive; however, it does not dance with the deads anymore, but intervenes directly in scenes of everyday life. Paris' dance of death had dominated the genre in the late Middle-Ages; from 1538 on, the work of Holbein became the ultimate reference.

The pioneer life!

Viñales is a town in western Cuba. Its main street is lined with colorful colonial-era wooden houses (many now Casa Particulars), including the Municipal Museum, which explores the region’s history. Orchids and palms fill the sprawling Casa de Caridad Botanical Gardens. Viñales serves as a gateway to the Sierra de los Organos mountains and the Viñales Valley. The valley's tall, steep-sided limestone hills, known as mogotes, draw rock climbers. Here farmers ploughing just outside town.

In these times of quarantines and lockdowns (March 2020) I am fortunate to live in a rural area and can see these scenes from my own back door

This painting represents the good old days of horse ploughing and I had fun imagining what it would have been like back in the early days in Australia.

Vintage tractor design

Plough Monday is an old British harvest tradition that marks the start of the agricultural season. The day was a celebration for farm workers. They toured villages with a plow, singing and dancing their way through. What was the objective? Raising money. And if you weren’t a sport, chances were revelers would plow up your gardens. In case that happened, participants usually blackened their faces with soot to avoid being recognized. The unique festival all but died out in the 18th Century. Thankfully, places like East Anglia and East Midlands still keep the tradition alive.
