The '90s alternative radio scene in Seattle is still influential today!

As one of the two bookend clubs on either side of the Denny Way freeway overpass (the Off Ramp being the other) that ruled the Seattle scene during the early 1990s, when the city was discovered by the world. RKCNDY was a huge, two-level, warehouse-type space that had amazing sound and was an all around great place to catch a band most any night of the week. The closure of RKCNDY in 1999 was a hard hit to the all-ages scene, especially with Seattle's Teen Dance Ordinance still firmly in place for another three years.

The OK Hotel was a cafe, bar, and music venue located under the viaduct in Seattle's Pioneer Square district. Founded in 1988, the club came to an end with the Nisqually earthquake of February 28, 2001, which damaged numerous buildings in the historic district. Most widely recognized outside of Seattle as a prominent location in the movie Singles (1992), the OK Hotel was one of numerous active Seattle rock venues during the celebrated local scene of the late eighties.

the Dog House, a Seattle restaurant/bar located at 7th Avenue and Bell Street (at 2230 7th Avenue). Run by Laurie Gulbransen (1913-2000) for most of 60 years, it closed in on January 31, 1994. The Dog House was an epoch of Seattle history, a virtually non-stop, open-24-hours run of food, booze, music and fellowship The Dog House was a great place where truly people of all types and ages went. Their famous sign was true -- all roads did lead to the Dog House. In some ways I think it is possible to date the death of old Seattle to when the Dog House closed. After 1993 is when the high tech, hip Seattle, the darling of the national press city really took off.

Citizen Dick is a fictional grunge band featured in Singles, a ’92 romantic comedy set amidst Seattle’s explosive grunge music scene. The movie focused on six young people, most of whom lived in the same apartment building, and whose lives revolve around the city’s ever-expanding music scene. The inter-related stories about each character’s progress through the singles scene are intriguing and often funny, and the soundtrack is a grunge fan’s dream.

Tucked into the side of the Moore Hotel (built in 1907), this old school dive bar bordering Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood first opened it’s doors in 1939. They served up cheap (and stiff!) drinks from nice, but no-nonsense bartenders in a colorful, no-fuss, vintage atmosphere. It was the kind of place where bike messengers, old-timers, metal heads, hipsters, and oddball downtown characters sat side-by-side in harmony. They also had live music, dart boards, pool tables, a killer happy hour, and strangely, really good food. It closed suddenly in Spring 2016 and locals have lamented the loss of “the last real bar in Seattle” ever since.

Before it was the Hurricane, the space was the also-awesomely-divey, also-24-hours the Dog House for approximately a grazillion years—and before that, it was another 24-hour place called the Bohemian Continental, which moved into the building in the 1920s, meaning almost 100 years of 24-hour service on the site.

The Off Ramp Cafe was a dive situated in an odd no-man's land corner of downtown Seattle. it was trapped between a concrete off-ramp from southbound Interstate 5 and the tangled intersections of Eastlake Avenue, Stewart Street, and John Street, and wedged below a massive wall of the Denny Way bridge over I-5. Finding the rather small 300 person capacity joint was a challenge and parking was near impossible, but those factors didn't prevent the venue from being a destination for bar patrons and indie music lovers alike. The venue was at the heart of the grunge explosion in the ’90s that changed Seattle and music forever

Grunge Supersonics

Without question, The Hurricane Cafe was Seattle's quintessential greasy spoon and the combination of always being open and the great Belltown location meant it was where everyone seemed to wind up after taking in a show. Opened in 1994 by the people that owned Beths Café on Aurora, they wanted a new spot that could be another Beth's, yet closer to the city. As far as all-night diner's go, you couldn't beat The Hurricane Cafe. Breakfast anytime with huge omelets and bottomless hashbrowns as well as killer shakes, burgers, fries, and nachos. Oh, and they also had a full bar serving up some pretty mean drinks as well. It was probably best described as a comfortable dive bar that opened up a diner and made it awesome.

Sit & Spin! Ah, where to begin on this greatly-missed, legendary ‘90s #Belltown joint on 4th Ave…It was a laundromat/music club/art gallery/bar/café/diner – where folks could wash their dirty draws, see a punk show, play arcade and board games, and eat a big ass slice of $2 pizza - often all at once. The Sit & Spin embodied the spirit of so many old “only in Seattle” establishments, and was a favorite hangout for neighborhood locals, musicians, artists, students, street folks, whoever. So many great bands played small shows here

Citizen Dick is a fictional grunge band featured in Singles, a ’92 romantic comedy set amidst Seattle’s explosive grunge music scene. The movie focused on six young people, most of whom lived in the same apartment building, and whose lives revolve around the city’s ever-expanding music scene. The inter-related stories about each character’s progress through the singles scene are intriguing and often funny, and the soundtrack is a grunge fan’s dream. Cliff Poncier was one of the main characters and frontman of Citizen Dick, and when asked by an interviewer what the band’s song ‘Touch Me, I’m Dick’ was about, Cliff offers the following rambling reply: “Well, I think ‘Touch Me, I’m Dick,’ in essence, speaks for itself, you know?"
