Syros , or Siros or Syra is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea. It is located 78 nautical miles (144 km) south-east of Athens.

Syros is unique among all the other Greek islands because it is inhabited by 2 different religious communities, one Catholic and one Orthodox. The Catholics mostly live in Ano Syra, the old "Chora" (=capital) of the island, while the Orthodox mostly live in Ermoupolis, a newer town (19th century) and modern capital of the island and Cyclades, a town full of beautiful neoclassical buildings.
