Boathouses on the banks of the River Thames at Goring opposite the lock and just upstream from the old mill. Goring is an extremely picturesque village on the north bank of the Thames in Oxfordshire, just across the river from Streatley in Berkshire. Here the river flows through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills in the north and the Berkshire or North Wessex Downs in the south. Goring has been the haunt of artists including JMW Turner. The river scene at Goring on Thames as viewed from the road bridge. This is one of the most picturesque places along the length of the river at the point where it flows between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs known as the Goring Gap. A lock has been here since the 1500s when a local miller needed a head of water. The present lock was first constructed in 1787 and was rebuilt in 1921.

A view downriver at Marlow on Thames in Buckinghamshire captured on an autumn afternoon. The suspension bridge spanning the river was constructed in 1832 and was designed by William Tierney Clark' It was the prototype for the Szechenyi Bridge in Budapest and bears a plaque linking it with that city. Stunning monochrome photograph of the London Thames Barrier

The scene just above the old mill in Goring-on-Thames. Here the river divides, the main stream passing through the lock (just behind us) and rushing over the weir whilst this branch once turned the millwheel. Boats are frequently moored here and opposite are some recently refurbished boathouses and a row of black and white buildings which houses the dentist's surgery! Goring became famous in recent years as the home of George Michael who lived next to the Mill. Digital art from my original photo

This is my very own version of London and the Thames produced by pen and then edited in negative. The drawing consists of many hours of hard work and has fine detail within. Most of London's modern buildings have been added in so its up to date from 2018. Looks great on anything and perhaps you can use it as a map if your visiting this fine city :)

The weir at Streatley-on-Thames in West Berkshire as seen from the road bridge linking this village with Goring-on-Thames on the northern, Oxfordshire bank. This weir is a few hundred yards below the much longer one at Goring. Where the houses in the image now stand is the site of Streatley Mill which was destroyed by fire in 1926 n- although paintings and early photographs of it still exist. The hills behind are the start of the North Wessex (or Berkshire) Downs.

An Autumn scene on the Thames at Sandford Lock just south of Oxford. Taken late in the day during early November, the low sun intensifies the autumnal colours. Sandford lock is the deepest on the Thames and is also one of the oldest.

The toll bridge over the River Thames linking the villages of Pangbourne and Whitchurch on Thames. This view is from Pangbourne Meadows on the south bank looking north to Whitchurch.. The first bridge here was wooden and was constructed in 1792 followed by a further one in 1852. The present bridge is iron and was originally built in 1902. It was recently refurbished in 2013--14. It is one of only two toll bridges remaining over the Thames, the other being at Swinford.

Whitchurch is on the north bank of the river, opposite the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire on the south bank. The toll bridge connects the two. The church is the parish church of St Mary, originally medieval although it was extensively rebuilt in 1858 by the architect Henry Woodyer.

A digital art image of The Thames Path at Reading Bridge connecting the town of Reading in Berkshire with Caversham on the north bank of the River Thames. Originally there was just one bridge, Caversham Bridge, just further upstream but as the main town absorbed the village of Caversham in the early 1900s, a new bridge was deemed necessary and this structure was finally opened in 1923.

A captivating image of the view over the River Thames from Ray Mill Island. On the right is the Boathouse Restaurant sitting beside Boulters Lock and which was once a watermill. Taplow and Maidenhead are joined by an elegant footbridge on Ray Mill Island. The lock itself was the subject of several paintings in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. My photograph has been finished as a coloured pencil drawing.

A pleasure boat taking sightseers on a trip along the River Thames. Here it's passing the boathouses on the Caversham riverbank at Reading, Berkshire. This is a busy stretch of the Thames with boats such as this often negotiating their way through racing crews in training, private launches, canoeists and the ever-present flocks of swans and geese! Standing on the side of the river lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, looking over to the white painted lock keeper's cottage and the wooden office. The top gates are open and the lock chamber is full waiting for the next boat travelling downstream to enter. The weeather's been hot so there are umbrellas over control boxes to offer shade to the operator!

The eastern approach to the lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. The weir and lock island with its picturesque white painted lock keeper's cottage are on the left. Behind us the Thames flows on to Pangbourne and Reading and ahead is the route to Wallingford and Oxford. Here the river passes between the North Wessex Downs to the south and the Chiltern Hills to the north in a passage known as the Goring Gap.

Just upstream from the town of Marlow-on-Thames in Buckinghamshire. We can see the houses and the spire of All Saints Church - a local landmark. The Thames here is famous for rowing with a number of Olympic rowers training both in Marlow and at the nearby National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey, This is the scene from the Thames Path National Trail which starts near the source of the Thames and continues all the wat to the Thames Barrier in London.

Here the Thames is passing through the Goring Gap - an opening between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs - before flowing past Pangbourne and Reading en route to London and the sea. Not surprisingly this area has been a haunt for artists - including JMW Turner!

There has been a lock here since the 1500s when a local miller wanted a good head of water to drive the wheel. This was reconstructed as a pound lock in 1787.

The Thames Barrier is a retractable barrier system that is designed to prevent the floodplain of most of Greater London from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the North Sea. It has been operational since 1982.
