Denver's Colorado Mine Company was one of those places that wasn’t what it seemed. It was a dive bar of sorts, but slightly classier and wrapped in a unique style of western kitsch with a menu to match. It was the kind of place your mother had warned you about, but that only made it that much more fun to hang out there. The restaurant lives on in America's collective consciousness as the creator of the "Fool's Gold" sandwich, one of Elvis Presley's all-time favorites, so much so that he would fly his private jet from Graceland to Denver just to get his fix.

Located in Tucson, Arizona, The Buffet Bar & Crock Pot has a fascinating name and a long, storied history beginning just after prohibition in 1934. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but then it’s not supposed to as it's one of coolest dive bars in the country where the drinks are stiff and won't set you back much.

While there are many country-themed bars that claim to be a honky-tonk, very few live up to the iconic name. Founded in 1978, Clifton, Tennesee's Julie's Place was was as genuine as it got and kept the spirit of the original American honky-tonk alive. This slightly divey bar wrapped around a dance hall had just enough of a tawdry reputation to deliver the promise and kept Wayne County residents coming around for years for live country music 7-days a week.

"I know a dark secluded place, a place where no one knows your face. A glass of wine, a fast embrace... it's called Hernando's Hideaway." In the 1954 musical The Pajama Game, Hernando's Hideaway is a raunchy dive bar in East Dubuque, Illinois, perched on a high cliff overlooking the highway between Dubuque and Galena. The movie was based on the stage play of the same name which, in turn, was based on the book (7 1/2 Cents, by Richard Bissell); it is only in the original book that there is information about where the story takes place.

Whether you went to college in New Brunswick, or Tucson, Arizona, odds are you knew Greasy Tony's well. From the original location in Jersey in '68 to the AZ location that opened in '78, Greasy Tony's served up consistent cheese steaks and pizza for decades until founder Tony Giorgianni died in 2008. Both locations were total dives that spoke to the kind of food they served, and that's exactly how people liked it. Whether you were there between classes for a quick bite or bombed out of your mind at 3am and in need of sustenance to stave off alcohol poisoning, Greasy Tony was there for you. This design came about with the launch of the Tucson location in 1978 and was immortalized on screen when Booger wore one in Revenge of the Nerds

The Toy Tiger of Louisville, Kentucky was home to all kinds of debauchery that involved scantily clad young women in some capacity. Ranging from wet t-shirt and sexy banana eating contests, this joint made no apologies for being sleazy and never pretended to be something it wasn’t and when the stage wasn’t being used to debase women, it played host to an amazing array of national touring bands as well as popular local acts. It’s iconic, animated Las Vegas style marquee stood on Bardstown Road from the time it opened it’s doors in 1973 until last call in 1999 and then it hung around for some time after that as the building sat empty, falling into disrepair and then being razed to make way for a gas station.

Fort Lauderdale's The Button was owned by Gregg Newell, known locally simply as “Crazy Greg,” was there every night sporting his signature Hawaiian shirt and kookie propeller hat since its opening in 1970. Attached to a cheap hotel, this legendary spring break party spot was so wild, it was actually more than the city could handle at times. The Button hosted wet t-shirt, French kissing, and bikini contests, many of which resulted in fines and charges of promoting “lewd and lascivious” activity by the state as usually pushed the boundaries of both common decency and the law. The bar also routinely ran afoul of occupancy limits, a side effect of its extreme popularity. The Button closed in 1987 after mounting issues with the city.

In the beginning, Yamagata finds Shotaro Kaneda at Harukiya. Harukiya is a seedy, rundown bar. It is a frequent hangout of The Capsules. It is located just off the Eastern Express Highway in District 17. It is run by an unnamed bartender. After escaping from the military hospital a second time, Tetsuo arrives here to ask the barkeeper for drugs. The barkeeper light-heartedly points out that something is strange about him, but shrugs it off while mentioning that the drugs are costly. Shortly after, Kaisuke and Yamagata walk in to find the bar destroyed and the barkeeper dead, and Yamagata is killed by the unstable Tetsuo during a confrontation.
