Witherslack Hall Steam Locomotive Hoodies

A black and white image of Hall class locomotive 6990 Witherslack Hall on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway near Gothland, home of the TV series Heartbeat. Witherslack Hall was built by British Railways to a GWR design in 1948 and withdrawn in 1966.

Although this engine could be considered a GWR engine, it was built after nationalisation, hence was always a BR engine. 'Olton Hall' was painted into red livery in the early 2000s and it went on to star in the Harry Potter films as the locomotive that hauled the 'Hogwarts Express'. I remember seeing this locomotive on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway when it was painted in green and before it rose to stardom. The GWR fans weren't so keen on the red livery, but I think it looks quite fetching!

Great Western Railway locomotive number 6960 'Raveningham Hall' awaits its next task at Minehead station, end of the line on the West Somerset Railway (WSR). This locomotive (one of the Great Western's 'Hall Class' of engines) is named after a country estate and stately home in Norfolk. The 4-6-0 coal-fired Hall class engines were designed by Charles Collett and were used for mixed traffic operations between 1928 and 1965. Of the 259 built, Raveningham Hall is one of just seven preserved locos of its type. It was built in 1944 at the GWR's Swindon works and remained in service until 1964, when it was sold for scrap. Restoration Project This Great Western Railway 4900 'Hall Class' steam locomotive 'Dumbleton Hall' currently sits 'awaiting overhaul' at Buckfastleigh station on the South Devon Railway (Devon, England). The Hall Class locomotives were developed by Charles Collett, the GWR's chief mechanical engineer from 1922 to 1941. This particular locomotive, built in Swindon, Wiltshire in 1929 is named after a Tudor-style, manor house near Evesham (now a hotel). She was originally stationed at Old Oak Common (West London), and after spells based at Oxford, Cardiff and Reading she was transferred to the West Country.
