On 19 April 1968, the 2nd Battalion of the 138th was deployed to Vietnam to provide fire support to the 101st Airborne Division in northern South Vietnam. On 19 June 1969, their firebase, Firebase Tomahawk, was attacked by the North Vietnamese Army 4th Regiment. The attack was repulsed, with the 138th suffering 9 casualties, and the North Vietnamese suffering 23

The 104th Field Artillery Regiment was organized as Battery K, 1st Regiment of Artillery I the New York National Guard on 3 April 1867. It would experience numerous redesignations and reorganizations in the decades leading up to it being mustered into Federal service in 1916 for Mexican Border service as the 1st Field Artillery Regiment. Drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917, it was reorganized and redesignated on 1 October 1917 as the 104th Field Artillery and assigned to the 27th Division.
