Hurst Hemi Under Glass is the name given to a series of exhibition drag racing cars campaigned by Hurst Performance between 1965 and 1975. Each wheelstander was based on the current Plymouth Barracuda for the corresponding model year. The car was so named because the fuel injected Chrysler Hemi engine was placed under the Barracuda's exceptionally large rear window. The result of the rearward weight transfer was a "wheelie" down the length of the drag strip. The Hemi Under Glass was developed by Hurst Corporation to showcase their products in the A/FX class - precursor to funny cars. In 1965, George Hurst hired Wild Bill Shrewsberry of Mansfield, OH, an accomplished drag racer who had raced for both Mickey Thompson and Jack Crissman.

Tom Hoover, whose work at Chrysler included development of the legendary Max Wedge and 426 Hemi V-8 engines, the 1970 Plymouth AAR ’Cuda, and the 1978 Dodge Li’l Red Express truck, is best known as the “Father of the Hemi.” Hoover trained as a physicist at Juniata College in his hometown of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He received his master’s degree from Penn State and later earned a master’s degree in automotive engineering from the University of Michigan while working for Chrysler. The Duster was a semi-fastback two-door coupe version of the Valiant sedan that was marketed by Plymouth from 1970 to 1976 model years. The Duster coupe provided the compact-sized Plymouth Valiant with a sporty body style to attract younger customers. Numerous trim and option package variants of the Duster were offered with names that included Feather Duster, Gold Duster, Silver Duster, Space Duster, Duster Twister, Duster 340, and Duster 360. These marketing variations of the basic Duster design targeted customers seeking economy, cargo capacity, and/or performance. During its development, the car was a $15 million effort to update the Valiant for the 1970 model year, though the Valiant badge appeared only on the first model year Dusters.

The Plymouth GTX is an automobile introduced as the Belvedere GTX in 1967 by Plymouth. It was positioned as a mid-sized upscale-trimmed performance muscle car through the 1971 model year and positioned as a "gentleman's muscle car." The GTX optioned Belvedere was differentiated by a blacked-out grille and special rear fascia, fiberglass simulated hood scoops with optional racing stripes, a chrome pop-open fuel filler cap, and a tachometer mounted on the center console. Standard was Plymouth's 440 cu in V8 engine called the "Super Commando 440" rated at 375 hp and the mighty 426 cu in Hemi was available as an option. Along with these big block powerplants, the GTX models were delivered with a heavy-duty suspension system as standard.

Designed as a value brand, Plymouth was well-suited to serve the post-war baby boom youth market as young men (and women) began taking to the streets, but Plymouth knew that customers wanted more. The combination of a line of lightweight vehicles with low price points, and easy access to some serious powertrains would propel the brand’s ascension from economy car nameplate to muscle car legend. Taking these lightweight cars and jamming a 426ci Max Wedge Hemi into them made for instant drag strip missiles, and professional racers saw what Plymouth was going and got behind them in great numbers. By 1970, Plymouth’s line of affordable muscle cars had blossomed into the Rapid Transit System, a group of true performers.
