The first Pizza Time Theater opened in San Jose, California, in 1977, featuring a concept of video games, pizza, and animatronic characters providing musical entertainment. The main character for which the establishment would later be named after was originally supposed to be a coyote, but due to an error somewhere along the way, the animatronic costume that was delivered was that of a rat which they obviously just rolled with.

In the early 1980s, entertainment restaurants blossomed after the Chuck E. Cheese chain defined the genre. Their immediate success inspired a gaggle of imitators, all with kid-friendly mixes of pizza, video games, and animatronic characters who sang and danced as parents ate pizza and kids ran around like maniacs. Major Magic's All Star Pizza Revue was one such imitator which opened in 1983 in the Toledo, Ohio suburb of Sylvania and while most other chains in this space died off by the mid '90s, Major Magic marched along all the way until 2010 before finally retiring from service.

Willy's Wonderland was a once-successful family entertainment center in the remote desert town of Hayesville, Nevada. Following the '80s era Showbiz model of greasy pizza, arcade games, and animatronic characters who perform musical numbers at regular intervals, Willy's felt plenty familiar to locals and tourists alike. Of course, the animatronic characters at Willy's Wonderland had a secret... original owner, Jerry Robert Willis, a notorious serial killer, and his psychotic partners, who often murdered unsuspecting families for their own twisted enjoyment, performed a satanic ritual to transfer their souls into the animatronic characters giving Willy's something the other places definitely didn't have!
