English Electric DP1, commonly known as Deltic, was a prototype 3,300 hp (2,500 kW) demonstrator locomotive employing two Napier Deltic engines, built by English Electric in 1955. The high power of the locomotive at an acceptably low axleload resulted in 22 similar locomotives being ordered by British Railways for use on East Coast Main Line express passenger services; the serial production of which became the British Rail Class 55.

English Electric built the deltic locomotives between 1961 and 1962, and this is a drawing of the prototype in distinctive blue livery. The name 'Deltic' comes from the Napier Deltic engines which unusually have three cylinders in triangular formations (as in the Greek letter 'Delta'.

Diesels galore!

As the Steam engine came to the end of its life, Diesel was King. They gained the name "Deltic" from the prototype locomotive, British Railways DP1 DELTIC, which in turn was named after its Napier Deltic power units
