A hundred years later, Kattegat once again is seen as a gathering by King Canute to built an army to avenge the death of Vikings who were slain in the Danelaw,England during the St. Brice's Day Massacre. Kattegat continues to be a center of commerce and a gathering place to plan and launch invading forces from Scandinavia. Because of its strategic location and economic importance, being the ruler of Kattegat grants a lot of power. Jarl Estrid Haakon is the current ruler of Kattegat. She has been able to make the city one of the few place in Scandinavia that is safe for pagans and Christians alike. Olaf Haraldsson wants to cement his rule as King of Norway. In order to accomplish this, he knows that he will have take control of Kattegat.

Later, after Haraldson is slain in single combat by Ragnar, the Lothbrok family abandons its farm, which had been put to the torch by the Earl's men, and relocates to Kattegat, where Ragnar rules as the new Earl.

Jomsborg, Pomerania, also known as Jómsborg, is a Viking stronghold at the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Jomsborg is a legendary location where the most pagan Vikings live. These Vikings are called Jomsvikings. They are very strict and rigid, and have incredibly specific rules they live by. The Jomsvikings are very loyal to their leader. They will fight to the death for him, even when they don't always think their leader is right. The Jomsvikings are currently led by Lord Harekr. Jomsborg is seen as a place of safety for pagan Vikings who are fleeing the Christian Vikings in Norway.

Ragnar "Lothbrok" Sigurdsson (Old Norse: Ragnarr Loðbrók, Ragnar means "keeper of the fort" and Lothbrok means "shaggy breeches") is a Viking farmer and warrior who yearns to raid the rumored riches of undiscovered England. His first wife is Lagertha, and they have two children named Gyda and Bjorn. His second wife is Aslaug, and they have four sons named Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar. Ragnar is the younger brother of Rollo. He becomes King of Kattegat.
