The lace monitor or lace goanna is a member of the monitor lizard family, Australian members of which are commonly known as goannas.

Lace Monitors are found along the east coast of Australia. In Australia, monitors are more commonly called goannas. The Lace Monitor is the second largest lizard in Australia. A large male can reach a maximum recorded length of more than 2 metres (6 1/2 feet) overall! An average adult length is about 1.5 m (4.8 ft). Photo taken Taronga Zoo, Sydney

The Goanna is a large lizard which lives in dry climates in Australia. It acquired its name because of its resemblance to the iguana. The Aboriginal word for goanna is Wardapi in the Warlpiri language and Perente in the Pintupi language. In the Aboriginal Art Regions of Central Australia, the Goanna is a totemic spirit and Australian Aboriginal artists paint their Goanna Dreaming to honour their ancestral spirit.
