The view of Shard is blocked by another building. Renzo Piano, the project's architect, designed The Shard as a spire-like sculpture emerging from the River Thames. He was inspired by the railway lines next to the site, the London spires depicted by the 18th-century Venetian painter Canaletto, and the masts of sailing ships.

The iconic Lloyds building is the home of the Lloyds of London Insurance Market. Designed and finished in 1977 by Richard Rogers, it started construction the year after his successful Pompidou Centre in Paris was completed. This style of architecture was innovative in having its services such as staircases, lifts, ductwork, electrical power conduits and water pipes on the outside, leaving an uncluttered space inside; and championed by famous architects Richard Rogers, Sir Norman Foster, and Renzo Piano. Drawn in Rotring technical pen and India ink at a large scale to ensure clarity on large paper sizes, and printed on high quality paper, The building is drawn here as an isometric projection, which depicts the subject as a diagram.
