Rio Grande Gorge Bridge Near Taos New Mexico I've crossed this bridge many times over the years, both by vehicle and by foot. There area sidewalks on both sides of the bridge plus a few lookout points where it widens to allow one to stop and let others pass by safely. The bridge is located approximately 10 miles NW of Taos on hwy 64 offering scenic views across the 1280 feet span. The Rio Grande Gorge is approximately 600 feet deep in this area with the bridge 650' above the gorge. Labyrinth at Montoso Campground Wild Rivers New Mexico by Debra Martz Over the years we have camped at a number of the campsites at Wild Rivers Recreation, a part of the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument north of Questa, New Mexico. This year, however, no camping due to the Covid19 pandemic so we just revisited the many sites and trails. This unicursal labyrinth has been here many years and was just behind the covered picnic table the year we camped at the Montoso camping area. I never did get the story as to when or why but it seems to be appreciated as noone has disturbed it over the many years. Chawalauna Overlook at Wild Rivers Recreation New Mexico 2 by Debra Martz If you take the first right after stopping at the pay station, the Chawalauna Overlook is the next place for amazing views. There is not a trailhead here into the gorge but there are views both upstream and downstream (this view) of the Rio Grande. You can see where the other trails reach the river and backcountry campsites at the bottom of the gorge, where ponderosa pines offer tall shade if you decide to trout fish. Bear Crossing at Wild Rivers Recreation New Mexico by Debra Martz Leaving the Chiflo stop, travel another approximate one mile south into the Wild Rivers Recreation Area and you come to the stop for Bear Crossing. This is one of a few trails that I have not hiked here. It is outside of the fee area and the does not receive the same level of upkeep that the longer trails do which are within the fee area. This trail is rated as Extremely Difficult and within 25 feet at the beginning of the trailhead I always turn around with a same thought, " still not for me!" Bear Crossing trail into the gorge to the Rio Grande River is one of two trails here that I've not hiked. It is rated Extremely Difficult and you don't have to venture out on the trail very far to find it is rated correctly. The average drop into the gorge from most of the trails is 800' and takes you through towering Ponderosa Pines. Sheeps Crossing Overlook to East Rim Trail at Wild Rivers Recreation New Mexico by Debra Martz The Sheep Crossing Overlook is the first pull-out you will see after entering the Wild Rivers Recreation area of Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument. The East Rim Trail begins here (there is a gate to get past the fence) and follows along the edge of the Rio Grande Gorge for more than three miles. The trail is an in and out and joins a two-track road at times. It is mostly level with a few ups and downs.
