How terrifying is this?! I had no idea jumping crocs were even a thing until I went to Darwin and saw all the ads for cruises on the Adelaide River (about 1.5hrs drive from Darwin). Essentially, tour boats go out on the Adelaide River, which has around 7,000 crocs living in its 150kms, and hang pork chops on fishing lines to get crocs to jump for them -- and man do they fly for creatures as large as they are! While it was good to see the crocs in a relatively controlled environment -- since I'm terrified of coming across one in the wild -- I'd have to do more research on the effects of these cruises before I went on one again, since it seemed to be very against the usual adage of "don't feed the wild animals."

It is one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus. After elephants and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the next largest land mammal. It is also the largest extant land artiodactyl. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates.

These kids were using large polystyrene blocks as rafts on the River Almond in Almondell and Calderwood Country Park, West Lothian, Scotland. The park is a semi wild nature retreat open to all. Best viewed LARGER.

The oldest stone bridge in the Highlands of Scotland which was the first bridge allowing the River Dulnain to be crossed with dry feet was built in what is now Carrbridge, Inverness-shire, Scotland, between May and November 1717 by a mason called John Niccelsone. He did so at the behest of Brigadier-General Alexander Grant of Grant at a cost of £100. The main aim of the bridge was to ensure that funeral processions from the south did not have to be delayed reaching Duthil Church when the river was in spate and unfordable. The bridge was damaged by a great flood in 1829, leaving the present fragile looking archway. BEST VIEWED LARGER

Two narrow boats on the Kennet and Avon Canal moored just downstream from Woolhampton in West Berkshire,England. The image was captured in early March on a bright and calm late winter afternoon. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers and thus provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway but was completely restored and reopened in 1990. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A wooden footbridge taking pedestrians and cyclists over the River Kennet in Newbury, Berkshire. Here an arm of the river has left the main stream - the Kennet and Avon Navigation - and after passing through a sluice gate rushes along just below the main waterway with further weirs adding to it. The river, through the sluices effectively controls the level of water in the canal. This section of the waterway was created between 1718-24 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A narrowboat negotiating the River Avon just upstream from its meeting with the Severn at Tewkwesbury, Gloucestershire. This has been produced as a digital painting using chalk effects. Just further upstream is the Severn-Avon lock which enables boats to join the main course of the Avon and continue up to Stratford-on-Avon. A boat of sightseeers heading across the Douro River in the city of Porto (or Oporto). This city, the second largest in Portugtal, lies on its north west coast at the point where the Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean. Across the river here are the warehouses and offices of the port wine companies - well worth a visit! The centre of the city has, since 1996 been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This image has been processed to give a coloured pencil finish.

An impressionistic scene of a yacht anchored on the River Deben at Woodbridge in Suffolk. This is the tidal stretch of the river which flows on to meet the North Sea at Felixtowe. Not only popular as a centre for watersports, particularly sailing and canoeing, this is an important ecological area - designated as a RAMSAR site (protected wetland) and an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural beauty. A riverside path leads into the town of Woodbridge with its quay and iconic tide mill.

The lolw tide has revealed the mudflats which are a haven for wildlife such as a variety of waders prodding the silt for food. Further on is the harbour at Woodbridge on the tidal stretch of the River Deben just before it flows into the North Sea at Felixtowe. The town was once known for its shipbuilding and rope making - and it is said that some of Sir Francis Drake's warships were built here.

Looking over the parapet of Halfpenny Bridge in Lechlade at the final navigable stretch of the River Thames for launches and narrowboats. Now it quickly becomes shallower and narrower - so only small craft such as canoes can carry on travelling upstream. Lechlade is at the southern most edge of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire and boasts the first (or last) lock on the Thames - St John's. Lechlade itself is a picturesque market town with plenty of welcoming cafés and pubs.

The river starts its life on the Berkshire (North Wessex) Downs near the village of Compton and winds its way through West Berkshire to finally meet the River Thames at Pangbourne.

A boat lies high and dry on the beach at Conwy, North Wales as it is now low tide. Here the river ends its journey to the Irish Sea having begun life on the Migneint Moor, 34 miles away. Across the estuary is the bulk of the Great Orme and behind us is the toiwn of Conwy dominated by Edward I's massive castle. This image has been finished as a digital pencil drawing.

Spring is bursting out along the River Kennet at Newbury, Berkshire. Here the river splits into several channels - and just to the right, just out of sight, is the Kennet and Avon Canal. This section of the river leaves the main waterway just behind us and plunges through a weir to run swiftly along here. This is a quiet spot away from the canal's towpath. This image has been finished in the style of a coloured pencil sketch.

A village sitting among the palm trees on the banks of the River Nile somewhere between Aswan and Luxor. The Nile has always been the lifeblood of Egypt as it passes through the Sahara Desert. The area immediately by the riverbanks is green and fertile, but just behind are the desert sands. Flooding has now been controlled by the nearby Aswan Dam which also provides electricity to the region. The image has an oil pastel finish - developed from my original photograph.

The sun setting over the River Thames just upstream from Marlow in Buckinghamshire, looking towards Bisham on the Berkshire side. This stretch of river is frequently busy with rowing, kayaking and canoeing crews training as both Marlow Rowing Club and the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey are close by. An old brick railway bridge spanning the River Kennet at Reading, Berkshire. This is very near the mouth of the Kennet where it joins the River Thames. The bridge carries the line from Reading to Waterloo. The area here is Kennetside - in the past an industrial area of the town. Just further along and under the bridge is the old gasworks and a bit further still takes us to where Huntley and Palmers once made their biscuits.
