Bringing football to the world. The World Football League (WFL) was a short-lived American football league that played in 1974 and part of 1975. Although the league's proclaimed ambition was to bring American football onto a worldwide stage, the farthest the WFL reached was placing a team – the Hawaiians – in Honolulu, Hawaii. The league folded midway through its second season, in 1975.

he World League of American Football, described by The New York Times as the "first trans-Atlantic major sports league", began play on March 23, 1991. The league's first championship game – World Bowl I – drew 61,108 fans to London's Wembley Stadium on June 9, 1991. But attendance and television ratings on ABC and the USA Network were a disappointment in the United States. NFL owners voted to shut down the WLAF after two seasons in 1992.

Defunct Empire Football League

The WFL team eventually known as the Charlotte Hornets was, for a time, located in Boston and called the Bulls, shortened from the Bulldogs. Because no suitable field was available in Boston, the team merged with the New York team and became the New York Stars before the 1974 season. By the end of that season the team had moved to Charlotte.

Their home field in Barcelona was the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuic, the 1992 Olympic Stadium, and later the Mini Estadi. The Dragons were successful on the field, making it to 4 World Bowls (1991, 1997, 1999, 2001) and winning World Bowl V in 1997.

The Chicago Fire was an American football team in the short-lived World Football League for one season, 1974.

The Montreal Machine were the sole Canadian team in the World League of American Football (WLAF), a springtime developmental professional league set that played in 1991 and 1992. There were also three European teams and six North America-based teams. Like all WLAF teams, the Machine played American rules football, 11 players per side on a 100-yard field, rather than Canadian rules football of 12 players per side on 110-yard field. The franchise folded in September 1992 when the WLAF league went on an indefinite hiatus.

The Detroit Wheels were an American football team, a charter member of the defunct World Football League. Soon after Gary Davidson announced the WFL's formation in October 1973, he was approached by a man named Bud Hucul about putting a team in Detroit. In a harbinger of things to come, however, it emerged that Hucul had a long history of legal problems, including 30 arrests and 27 lawsuits. A more credible offer came from a consortium of ten Detroit-area investors who were formally awarded a franchise on December 13, 1973. The group would eventually expand to 33 people, including singer Marvin Gaye, Motown Records vice-president Esther Gordy Edwards, Milford Fabricating owner Edward Nishon, and Little Caesars founder Mike Ilitch.
