The shipyards were open to all except House Melantha and House Pelagia vessels who were strictly forbidden from using the facility. All other house affiliations were welcome, but the prices depended on political favor. These shipyards were an alternative to the shipyards at Tallaan. Another major shipyard in the Tapani sector was the Fondor Shipyards in the Freeworlds Territory.

The Kessel Run was one of the most heavily used smuggling routes in the Galactic Empire. Han Solo claimed that his Millennium Falcon "made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs".
