The 2d Battalion served almost seven years in South Vietnam. Fighting scattered actions under two different brigade headquarters from the Mekong River delta in the south to the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone up north, they earned 27 campaign streamers, six American and eight Vietnamese unit citations between them, including two Presidential Unit Citations earned by 2nd Battalion for An Khe and Dak To.

On 1 April 1975 it was redesignated as the 2d Battalion, 58th Infantry, assigned to the 2d Armored Division, and activated at Fort Hood, Texas, then inactivated again on 31 May 1981 at Fort Hood, Texas, and relieved from assignment to the 2d Armored Division. Its Headquarters transferred on 28 August 1987 to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command and activated at Fort Benning, Georgia, as a training unit as the 4th Battalion, 2d Infantry Training Brigade) On 1 October 2005 it was redesignated as the 2d Battalion, 58th Infantry Regiment. The battalion is tasked to provide trained and ready soldiers for the Army as part of the 198th Infantry Brigade.

The 1st and 2nd Battalions and as already noted the 3rd Battalion were assigned to the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division (United States) at Fort Stewart, Georgia on 16 December 1987. Elements of all three battalions of the 7th Infantry Regiment saw action in the Cat Gulf as part of Operation Desert Storm, Kosovo and more recently Operation Iraqi Freedom. On 16 February 1996, the battalions were assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division.

The 2nd Battalion fought the first major battles at Ap Bau Bang on 12 November 1965 and Ap Nha Mat on 5 December 1965. Heavy losses were suffered at Ap Nha Mat and three soldiers are still listed as missing. The 1st Battalion sustained its first major casualties of the war on 21 December 1965 when the enemy ambushed the command group of Company B as the company was moving out of Bien Hoa on routine patrol. On 25 August 1966 a patrol from Company C, 1st Battalion became involved in what became known as the Battle of Bong Trang with heavy losses on both sides.

In June 1966 during Operation Hawthorne, Company C, 2d Battalion, 502d Infantry was conducting a mission to locate elements of the North Vietnamese People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) 24th Regiment. Charlie Company made contact with what was estimated to be a battalion-sized enemy element. Under heavy enemy fire and unable to maneuver in any direction, CPT Bill Carpenter called for air strikes on top of his position in an attempt to force the enemy to withdraw. "We might as well take some of them with us", he radioed to the 2nd Battalion command post. The Napalm attack injured seven of Carpenter's men, but the PAVN ceased fire long enough to allow Company C to consolidate, reorganize and establish a position

The initial brigade to go was the 3rd Brigade composed of the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry, the 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry, the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry and the 2nd Battalion, 9th Artillery. The urgency of getting the 3rd Brigade to the Central Highlands of Vietnam led to the Army and Air Force undertaking Operation Blue Light, a massive airlift of the entire 3rd Brigade from Hawaii to Pleiku. The airlift began on 28 December 1965 and was successfully concluded on 17 January 1966.

Three 12th Infantry battalions deployed to South Vietnam with the 4th Division from August through October 1966. The 2nd Battalion of the 36th Infantry Regiment stationed was a nuclear capable unit firing the Davy Crockett rocket. The unit was stationed in Germany during the cold war. The 2nd Battalion nickname was "Rangers" The motto is "Deeds Not Words!"

The 46th Infantry Regiment ("The Professionals") is a unit in the United States Army that served in World War II and Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, the 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry and the 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry were part of the Americal Division. Both initially deployed to Vietnam with the 198th Infantry Brigade from Fort Hood, Texas. But the 1-46th was placed under operational control of the 196th Infantry Brigade (Light) and later became fully a part of the 196th Brigade. It inactivated on 22 May 1971 at Fort Lewis, WA. The 2nd Battalion was reactivated at Fort Knox, Kentucky as a Basic Combat Training unit.
