JAWA was a motorcycle manufacturer founded in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1929 by František Janeček, who bought the motorcycle division of Wanderer and by concatenating the first letters of Janeček and Wanderer, created the name JAWA. By the 1950s, JAWA was one of the top motorcycle manufacturers in the world and exported its popular model 350 Pérák into over 120 countries. The 350 California achieved similar popularity in the 1970s and you could spot them in their typical red and black livery everywhere from Californian beaches to Auckland city streets. By 1990 increasing competition from Japanese manufacturers had finally taken its toll on the company and production ceased, but to this day enthusiasts remain quite active.

The legacy of the Sacramento Mile goes all the way back to 1959 when Grand National champion Carroll Resweber captured the first main at the California State Fairgrounds. Since that historic event, every top flat track motorcycle racer in the world has competed at the California Capitol City's legendary dirt oval, doing battle at speeds topping 140 miles per hour.

Motocross dirt track

Having tired of driving the I76 across Nebraska and Colorado, we had opted to take the I76 Alternate after North Platte. The day was heavily overcast, it did rain later, but our travels became so much more interesting. This is an image of an old silo in Merino, Colorado. It was clear that the building had seen better days, but the soft, flat lighting gave the old building such interest against the turbulent sky.

When we woke up on our second morning at Welcome Flat, we were stunned to see this. The clouds were finally clearing after a day of heavy rain that had kept us huddled in the hut. The only downside was it meant we had to leave the hut, which had its own natural hot pools, and hike 17km back to reality!

Regardless of whether you're an experienced motorcyclist, just starting your adventure, or a devoted American Dirt Tracker enthusiast, it's the perfect choice for all two-wheeled lovers. Vintage Flat Track Racing design

During WWII, auto racing shut down as rationing of everything from fuel and rubber to metals made it near impossible, plus, most drivers, crew, and spectators were all taking part in the war effort. As the war wound down and the boys started coming home, Los Angeles racing promoter Bill White approached the city about paving a quarter-mile track in the L.A. Coliseum and hosting midget races. The city loved the idea, and green flagged paving right over the athletic track. The result was a flat track with inside pits. White formed the United Racing Association (URA) for the midget racers, and they got back to racing in 1945. They ran two races the first year, averaging 36,000 people a night, and the next year they ran 15 events.
