Lynmouth, Devon, August 2022 In the north-east corner of Devon, England, lies the village of Lynmouth, once described by the artist Thomas Gainsborough as "the most delightful place for a landscape painter this country can boast". For "painter", one could also substitute "photographer". This part of Devon, on the northern slopes of Exmoor, was very isolated until the late 18th century when it was "discovered" by the likes of Shelley, Wordsworth and Coleridge. Access was made easier with the advent of the railways, in particular the narrow gauge "Lynton & Barnstaple", which linked up with the Great Western at Barnstaple. Tide Out at Lynmouth, August 2022 The delightful fishing village of Lynmouth (North Devon, England). While the village basks in the summer sunshine, it's hard to comprehend that in the devastating flood of August 1952 here, 34 people lost their lives, 100 homes were destroyed, and 34 cars were washed out to sea. The flooding was caused by a storm of tropical intensity depositing 9 inches of rain on nearby Exmoor in less than 24 hours. Date: 27th August 2022.
