Back in 2016 I produced a series of portraits based on the classic monsters. This is the first piece. The villainous Count Orlok, as portrayed by Max Schreck in the silent film Nosferatu. Whilst this character started out as a knock off of Dracula, Orlok and his iconic design has become something of an icon itself.

Bunnicula was once the pet of Dracula. He lived in Romania, during 1475. In New Orleans, 1833, he lived with Dracula. 200 years ago, he was locked away in a chest for centuries without any food. Eventually, he met Jean Lafitte after he was freed from the chest. The two worked together to defeat the British by using a special locket that showed the future, where they got a glimpse of Bunnicula's future of meeting Chester and Harold.

Nosferatu does not like the sun... not one bit. I understand how he feels. This is my tiny homage to count Orlok portrayed by Max Schreck in the famous 1922 movie Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.

Count Orlok Nosferatu Inspired

The results are in and everyone agrees: the best vampires are repulsive, rat-like Nosferatu-types, not suave, seductive Dracula-types. Those are the types there are.

Just because you're a blood-sucking denizen of the night doesn't mean you have to have a bad attitude - are you a YESferatu or a NOsferatu?

I love the scene in Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens after Count Orlok bites Ellen Hutter's "lovely neck." As Orlok slowly looks up, with his twisted claw wrapped around the head of his victim, he stares directly into the camera for a beat, which makes for one of the creepiest scenes ever. As I often do, I captured my own still of this scene for reference and tried to pay tribute to the moment by painting in a dark, minimal 2-tone feel inspired by the grim but stark look of the movie. To contrast the near-black brushwork, I created a graphic background with my signature gradient banding in purple. Then I fit everything into an oval with a grainy vignette to sort of fuse vintage and modern into one look and tie it all together.

ABSINTHE MONSTERS 2 (COUNT ORLOK)

My favorite scene in Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens is the creepy shadow on the wall as Count Orlok ascends the staircase toward his final victim; it is one of the most iconic images in film and perfectly captures the ambiance of classic horror. In tribute to the simplicity of this still, I kept the artwork as minimal as possible. To contrast the near-black brushwork of the silhouette, I created a graphic background with my signature gradient banding in greyscale. Then I fit everything into an oval with a grainy vignette to sort of fuse vintage and modern into one look and tie it all together.
