FRIO RIVER

It was 2016 when I went to Helmsdale (NE Scotland), and on my first look around I saw this view on the road into the wilderness of the flow country on the edge of town with the Helmsdale river snaking back to its boggy source. The road itself bends off to the left out of sight (its not obvious from the source photo either). From that point on it rained all trip. I've painted this view in oil on a 16x12 inch board, using a lot of mauve with naples yellow as the base for the background, into which I blended sap green, crimson, cobalt blue and a fair amount of titanium white - all done working wet paint into wet paint on the board.

A section of the Avon Aquaduct as it crosses the River Avon in Muiravonside Country Park, near Whitecross, Falkirk District, Scotland. The Avon Aquaduct runs through the middle of Muiravonside Country Park. Formerly an estate owned by the Stirling Family of Falkirk, this 170 acre park comprises woodlands, parkland and the River Avon. At 810 feet long, this aquaduct is the second longest in Britain and lifts the Union Canal 86 feet over the River Avon. The spectacular views from the top make the climb worthwhile. A town tucked in the mountains

The Camps Viaduct (built 1820) in Almondell and Calderwood Country Park, West Lothian, Scotland. Closed about 1960, the Viaduct used to carry the line from the Shale Oil works at Pumpherston to the North British Railway at Camps. It is now part of the National Cycle Network route 75, and provides magnificent views of the river from above. The park is a semi wild nature retreat open to all. This is an HDR version.
